Maybe they are looking for some tasty waves and a cool buzz?

Source? Their announcement listed EDT and Hawaii time, assuming that was to cover the whole U.S. I've not seen it was going to be revealed in Hawaii except for some speculating here because of the time zones.
The teasers from OEMs dozens of pages back said it would be revealed at https://www.overlandexpo.com/west/ in AZ.

It's one of the top 3 States for Tacoma Sales. I remember when they launched the 2017 Pro in Hawaii too, they had a bunch of off-road driving locations.

They want to show it off outside in the dark so we still can’t see anything. :)

I’m betting on two engine choices. The 2.4L turbo as the base engine with the upgrade being the 2.4L Max hybrid which has already been confirmed. Probably only optioned on the pro, trail hunter and limited. Can’t see them using any other hybrid system besides the iforce max. The parallel hybrid systems used in their other models would not be suited to truck use and cramming one in a fully boxed body on frame 4x4 platform would be counter productive. That powertrain would be much better suited to a unibody maverick/Santa Cruz competitor. Wouldn’t be surprised if we see 270 hp and 315 pound ft of torque on the base engine, with the max probably putting out 310 + hp and over 400 pound ft torque. The torque curve of a small diesel without the problems and cost of fuel makes me salivate for the iforce max. Not to mention all Tacoma generations have been capable of putting up diesel numbers in terms of longevity, toyota knows their reputation has been based on this so I wouldn’t be surprised if the T-24A keeps up with that tradition. Buyers looking for mpg would just go for a Santa Cruz or maverick.

The MT Taco handles it OK. Screams at grade though and 80 km/h is max (3rd gear) if it's a long grade and 3000+ lbs.
Ahhh yes. But also don't forget the all mighty POWER STROKE!

Gotta love car companies naming themes. The list goes on and on...

    Edit:
I don't mess around. I get straight to the point. "It's a mini van engine"

I'm in south florida surrounded by miles and miles of swampy sand trails. 2wd would not cut it. However, if you never leave the pavement/gravel theres no need for 4wd/awd for anything since we're so flat.

My old manual truck had cruise control, it was a lot less sensitive before it kicked off going slower than the set speed. iirc it was 8-10 mph. The auto instead of kicking off, it shifts a bunch. Driving the same routes I go with cruise off, it doesn’t do it as much. So it is combination of things, soft low end, and programmed to find the lowest rpm for fuel economy. Which is odd since the engine isn’t built to lug. 3500-4500 seems to be where it is happiest power-wise, like every Toyota truck I have owned. It has what, taken Toyota around 50 years to finally give the US market a truck with some lowend torque.

The mini-van engine isn’t terrible, could be better though. Looks like they are (finally!) fixing it.

Probably use 4WD 6 months out of the year here. That said, they sell 2WDs in our area mostly to ranches for irrigation maintenance.

Lexus revealed the LC500 at the 4 Seasons Hualalai (most expensive hotel on Hawaii island) a few years back, we’ll see if Toyota do the same or just go to a Marriott.

Tacoma is Hawaii’s state vehicle even the popo drive around in unmarked 4Runners, especially on Hawaii island.

Weird part is Toyota USA has zero authority in Hawaii and don’t operate there. It’s like going to Puerto Rico.

I highly doubt the reveal will be in Hawaii.

I feel bad for my mini van motor when I push it for long stretchs at grade and high RPM lol. (3.5k +) I know power band says keep it there but it probably isn't great long term for it. Plan on keeping this Taco for at least 20 years ( 750 000 km or more i hope)so try to minimize the long haul tows through Rockies but inevitable being here in the foothills. For now though been very impressed with versatility of it and MT option. Even more surprised and decision to keep MT in the family for 4th Gen. Respect to Yota in today's day and age for keeping it.

My 1st Gen went 435K miles before it gave up the ghost, and have pushed that engine hard at times, that poor thing has been all over the West grossly overloaded pulling mountain grades screaming! A head gasket failed, while I could just fix that…might as well do both heads at the same time, didn’t feel comfortable doing that with so many miles on it, do all that work and never know if the bottom end would fail. So it is getting a whole new engine.

Hopefully with the 4G they offer the MT on more trim levels. I like the ACLB SR/SR5s. I mean SR5 stands for Sport Rally 5 Speed (manual trans) after-all. Only way to get an ACLB MT is in the Sport. Not terrible, however it would cost an extra $5K OTD to get it. Plus would have to change out a few things wheels for 16s, unpainted fender flares, and suspension. Asinine they don’t offer it in the SR base models, it used to be the cheap solution.

If they blow this thing out of the water and put MT in more bed configurations such as long bed double cab. I will definitely buy one lol. Absolutely the best truck then.
A true beast in the age of dying internal combustion and MTs.

This was a rollercoaster. I was afraid you were going to tell us you junked the first gen. So glad to hear you are doing a new motor entirely. 435k is a very good run.

Off topic but if anyone is curious about what they had to say about the 4 Runner

Damn 14" screen is too big for the tacoma dash which means it will likely be a tablet style mounted externally to the dash. Not a fan, NOT. A. FAN. UGH-A-LEE. 10" would have been plenty and still fit into the contours of the dash.
