The thing is with noises in a vehicle is that if it isn’t super obvious, the noise is usually coming from somewhere COMPLETELY different than where it sounds like it is coming from. The sound echoes all over the place off of metal and glass and you’re just hearing where it is reflecting from.

That noise could be coming from a door handle, the bottom or back of the door OR it could becoming from somewhere else like the wheel well or the hood.

My 2nd gen it ended up being from the wheel liner but when you heard it you would have sworn it was the mirror. I was driving around with the whole door panel removed trying to find that shit. That said I did a bunch of adjustments before I got rid of it that reduced the noise, that were contributing to it but not actually the source.

Funny that you responded. I found your thread and posts from 2009 when I was searching all over for a solution.

It seems it was more the door handle letting air in the door cavity making the most noise. Tightening the bolt down snugged up the handle to the door.

Just got a ‘22 Trd OR and have the exact noise from the mirror. If I fold it in towards me it goes away.

Recently traded my 2019 2wd DCSB Sport for a 2020 4wd DCSB Sport. My 2019 was very quiet on the inside.

On the 2020, once you begin to go ~40mph and up a very noticeable wind noise develops on the driver side. It makes a sound similar to when a window is slightly cracked open. This happens no matter the wind speed of the day (no wind to high winds).

Using blue painters tape, I taped around the window glass where it comes into contact with the door with no change in the noise. Removed the tape. Then I tried taping around the base of the mirror where the base contacts the door. Very slight decrease in the noise. Removed the tape.

Then I taped off the gap between the mirror itself and the body of the truck (see picture). This stopped almost all of the noise.

When you roll down the window you can hear a lot of turbulence in this area. I folded the mirror in and still had the noise albeit not as much.

Anyone else have a similar issue? Any way to remedy this? I wouldn't have thought much of it if my 2019 hadn't been quiet compared to the 2020.

EDIT:
So I've pretty much ruled out the mirror itself and the door seal.

I purchased a new OEM complete mirror assembly and replaced it today with no change. Taped off the front of the door along the weather seal with no change. Taped off the front of the hood, the gap between the driver fender and hood, the trim piece on the windshield, and the gap between the door and body with no change.

It's something to do with the way the air is moving around the truck and mirror.

About 3:40 into this video, the Toyota Engineer talks about testing the aerodynamics of the Tacoma by sticking fins on the mirrors with tape. I know this will not make you feel better about the wind noise, but it does show Toyota was trying to put some thought in redesigning the 3rd Gen.

Update my taco still has no issues with mirror or any other noises that some have here. It just turned 1 year old today.Fingers crossed

It’s loud in my truck. Noise goes away completely if I fold the mirror.

my passenger side mirror makes the same noise. driver's side doesn't though. i have to roll up the passenger window above 50 mph or i have to listen to that annoying whistle.

where to do you tighten the door handle? do you have to remove the interior of the door?

I had a similar issue with my 2020. Ended up being the mirror cap.

You do have to remove the door panel to get to the door handle bolts. Honestly not very difficult to do overall.

Also for you all with a whistle at the mirror, post 19 shows I had a whistle sound coming from that area of the mirror because the plastic housing wasn't flush.

None of the noises have come back to this day since I tightened the door handle and fixed that mirror housing alignment.
