Hey good folks I have Tacoma sport that I had put some method wheels and 285s on the truck. After doing so I saw my mpg go down dramatically. Typically averaging 14-15mpg my cluster would read 265-275 miles to empty after filling her up.

fast forward to last Thursday where I got my truck serviced, I got an oil change, tire rotation, and a new battery. The next day I filled my truck up to my surprise the distance to empty went up to 380 miles. So far it’s kept up and I’m now averaging 17.5mpg. Any explanation for this?

2.5” OME lift, Koenig Six Shooter wheels, 275/70r17 Nokian Outpost AT, CMC, Nitro 4.88s, Greenlane aluminum sliders, CBI aluminum skid, Greenlane aluminum front bumper, Out Gear Solutions HC rear bumper, Baja SAE fogs
Summer gas vs winter gas. They probably also inflated the tires more.

But seriously...there is a reason they call the DTE the lie-o-meter.

Hand calcs are the only way to know for sure.

The computer is pretty good for longer trips. Around town, it always seems to run high.

But road trip at higher speeds? Very close to hand calculation.

It's the battery reset, don't overthink it, it will come back down.

Miles per tank hand calc is the only way to do it.

Maybe they did the hybrid conversion TSB while you had it in for service.

I solved my MPG anxiety by turning that screen to blank, and then only looking at it as the truck is shutting down when I know it’s gonna be good.

I got 23.9 coming from the high desert to sea level a few weeks ago, in stop and go traffic part way, on 285s…

I don't put much weight on the DTE display. My Tacoma is old enough to not have that feature, but it is on other vehicles in the driveway. Those are estimates based on how you've driven in the past, not what you're going to do in the future. Sunday my wife and I were caught in traffic on I75 here in GA. A transfer truck had caught fire and traffic came to a near stop. My DTE said 88 when we hit the slowdown. It took me over an hour to drive 4 miles past the backup and my DTE then said 65 DTE even though I'd only driven 4 miles.

In my experience the MPG display can vary a lot. Once again, my old Tacoma doesn't have that. But I've seen some vehicles that were never off by more than 1/2 mpg vs when hand calculated and usually either right on or only off by .2 or .3. That's close enough. I've seen others consistently off by 3-5 mpg.

This is not rocket science here people. It knows how much gas is in the tank and how far you have driven. The Taco brain is capable of simple division. Mine is surprisingly accurate
