Thinking about doing a TRD s/c....anyone have any advice / info on parts needed

have the 3.4L with the 6" fab lift with 35" tires and am getting 4.88's put on this week, wanted to know what people have paid and what all kits and parts that are needed to do the install....curious if anyone has same mods I have and what kind of gas mileage they are getting with it seen alot of mixed reviews on better/worse ( this is my daily driver )....of course I know getting on it (which I know I will do) will kill the gas mileage but curious of normal driving with and without loads... let me know if its something any of you have installed in your garage, I have mechanical background so thats an option for me if its possible to do....

I'd add a wideband O2 sensor to your exhaust (pre cat if it'll fit) to keep an eye on your air/fuel ratio. Start running 93 octane if you haven't already.

no dont need it for racing, just want it for more power when I need it and would just be nice to have for when I do want the extra get up and go speed.

That's exaggerated...by like double. You can pick up brand new units all day long online for $2900 shipped to your door. If you're not in a rush, keep an eye on ebay. I've seen 3 brand new units in the box sell for less than $2200, one as low as $1800 in the last 2 months.

I picked mine up for $1600 brand new in the box on craiglist. Dude bought it for his 4runner and ended up selling the 4runner. He worked for Toyota so I'm sure he got a great deal on it as well.

If you buy a brand new unit, it comes with everything you need for the install. One bit of advise, do a bit of research. The first gen kits are notorious for pinging in high gear/low RPM and WOT. The best fix is the URD 7th injector kit. It will set you back another $900, but you'll get ~40 ponies out of it and no more pinging no matter where you are in the powerband.

As for gas mileage, you gotta pay to play. It's the in town driving that's going to kill ya. Freeway speeds there has been zero change in gas mileage for me. The s/c has a vacuum based recirc built in. When your not boosting, its like you're not even supercharged. Some people have seen an increase in fuel economy on the freeway, but it's not because of the s/c. It's becaues you have to run premium fuel as opposed to the cheap shit. In town mileage sux. You mileage may vary, as it depends on how much you keep your right foot down. The WORST I've gotten so far was 14 MPG and that was the week after I got the 7th kit (i.e. WOT all day long ). I'm running 33's with full trail armor and the stock 4.10's.

I did the install of the s/c and the UDR 7th kit by myself in my garage. No special tools needed. Just need to be able to read and follow MOSTLY complete instructions. Check out my build thread if you want some more info.

EDIT:
I thought of a couple "extra" parts that are optional, but should be required when doing the s/c install. The s/c comes with one new belt. It's the one wrapped around the s/c and alternator. I went ahead and replaced the other 2 (ps and ac) instead of reusing the existing ones. You have to take the front two belts off anyway to get to the last one, you may as well replace them all.

awesome thanks for the great info ill start keeping an eye on ebay and craigslist, im in no rush just going to use my christmas bonus this year to pay it off in full, so just need the injector kit on top of the s/c and all should be good then sounds perfect to me, just did belts on the truck this past weekend but good advice on that, glad to know its something doable in a garage cause I hate paying techs to work on my truck not knowing what they did and what ways they rigged up their mess ups lol..

still curious on tuning after install and also on the long term effect of the s/c on the engine when I think of adding a turbo or a s/c you think of upgrading to dome piston heads and boring out cylinders for the extra compustion going on in the chambers. has anyone seen any posts/ personal engine problems with this kit? or this one made to not over do the forced air capability of the stock cylinder chambers? im sure it is since its factory designed but just havent been into engine performance with this truck till lately so that parts still kinda new to me. hoping it will help push the damn truck around better with all the mods I have with that trail armor and heavy tires just feels like a turtle everywhere I go, but then again still waiting to get the 4.88s done when they finally come in so cant say much till I drive it around with those on, heard that helps alot.

7th injector kit comes with a street tune already. No offense, but if you paid $1350 for installation/tune, you taken for a ride. It's was 6 hours of work in my garage with amature tools. $1350/6 = $225/hour

My buddy has 156000 miles on his 1st gen with the TRD s/c and UDR 7th. 96000 miles of it have been supercharged. The only thing he's had to replace, was his clutch. I don't think Toyota would not have let TRD offer a kit if the motor wasn't capable of handling it.

I did mine for 2800 with the 7th injector. NEW everything. Just have to find the right deal.

Literally JUST installed my SC this past weekend and i'm in love. Wait and look for deals, I picked up my SC Kit, TRD Boost guage, 6 URD 318cc Injectors, and the URD PiggyBack controller for $2300. Olny 6k on everything!
If you're just doing the SC then leave everything internal alone, no need for pistons, bore or stroke, or any of that yet by any means. I'm doing Intake, Exhaust, Injectors, and a smaller pully next (and in that order), and STILL wont be ripping into the internals yet.
No need for a tune until you ness with the injectors, your ECU will learn everything fresh once your install is done and you plug that battery back in. It took my buddy and I 4 hours to do the entire install and have her back on the road. No knocking, no Pinging, not problems. I switched to 93 octane about 3 tanks before my install but thats it.
