I'm with you. Back in the day my public school education taught that Pluto was a planet. I was devastated to find out it had been demoted.

 

I caught the news mid schooling and no longer know what to believe anymore. My entire basis for understanding the galaxy was shattered.

 

The whole argument was because it's too small or something?

By that logic, we should exclude Jupiter as it's uncertain whether it even has a solid core or not. Same goes for any other gaseous planet.

First let me state: Electrolysis, in this regard, is the corrosion of engine components when an excess current passes through them and the coolant acts as an electrolyte. It's made worse at the union of 2 or more dissimilar metals (ie the aluminum head and iron block) coolant can more readily become an electrolytic solution when is degrades from a weak acid to a weak base.

So technically yes, any coolant will eventually allow this to happen. Almost every single automotive coolant is ethylene glycol based (shoutout to my propylene glycol little equipment) but not all ethlyene glycol is the same. Green coolant is IAT or Inorganic Acid Technology. Our red coolant is HOAT (or currently I believe it is OAT) which is Hybrid Organic Acid Technology. Number 1 difference between the 2 is that to make the solution acidic, IAT will include Silicates, where as HOAT/OAT will use Phosphates. Asian car manufacturers say Silcate is bad for the seals they use but, (IMO cause I haven't done any really testing) the chemical composition of the alloys they use to make the various engine components is the real culprit. My anecdotal evidence is that I've seen alot of older 20r/22r and 22re engines that have the level of corrosion and pitting on the head equal to that picture I shared earlier. Each one was running green. I've also seen some 3cyl Kubota engines in Bobcats that had aluminum radiators leaking like a sieve from running green stuff for only 1 season

Regardless, due to the chemical differences between IAT and HOAT/OAT, every car manufacturer agrees IAT will degrade from an acid to a base faster than its competitors and should be replaced more frequently. I don't want to give you a brand new fear to be obsessed over... you're seriously A-Okay running green. But don't wait 3yr/30k to flush and change it, it will be worn out before then.

 

I guess technically yes? But electrolysis will speed normal galvanic corrosion way the fuck up, and there's always some amount of transient voltage going through the engine components

Thinking more about it, isn't galvanic corrosion only when 2 dissimilar metals fuse with one another?

One of those old timer tricks once you learn, you never go back. A little goes along way. Suspension parts and wheel lugs, it's a must!

I found out that the Hubble photographs, which when younger spurred imagination and blew me away, were actually shot B&W, the color was added in post. Sad day that was.

 

Still pretty crazy how good those images were given the limited bandwidth for transmission back to earth and given that infrared and visible light spectrum digital cameras back then were barely developed. Hubble is/was still very impressive, even if someone had to bust out the crayons to fill in the blanks.

 

No, coolant that is alkaline isn't effective for corrosion resistance. Brand new coolant will have a pH of 2.0-2.6

Yes that corrosion can be caused by a bad ground, it'll happen way worse with brand new coolant if it's bad enough. But even with good grounds it can still happen with coolant that expires
