This has been covered a few times I will try to summarize below:

Any of the bed stiffeners are better than nothing. They provide some support along with tie down points.

There is a difference between static and dynamic weight, the latter is what can stress the bed support in the location where it cracks.
Thus, even with bed stiffeners a high dynamic weight ( you have a camper shell/RTT and you’re racing in the BAJA 500) you can still cause cracks in that location. There are multiple threads on this forum with cracked beds even with stiffeners.

I’m using Total Chaos, no bed mat trim, and probably the most useful tie down points since they run the full length of the bed

I got a crack in exactly same spot and it looks just like yours, great…

So drilling a hole should stop it? I guess I’m getting bed stiffeners now.

I run minis made by @Tttacodan which didn’t require bed mat trimming but also don’t reach the bed bolt, just the D ring. I use my ‘16 OffRoad for on road kindergarten dropoff right now. I have some full size stiffies to swap to if I get going on trail. I did throw a backing plate on the bed wall backside to spread the load more than just a washer.

I haven’t done any math or any testing but my gut says any stiffener is good enough to solve for this, the d ring bolt threads will provide adequate strength for the job. Trimming the bed mat was something I preferred to avoid as well as the loss of loading width.

    yeah I was being silly.
There is thousands upon thousands of 3rd gens wheeling all over the west, they must all have dry sump oiling systems or else we would never hear the end of it haha

I’ll put in a good word for the 4wp stiffeners. I never made full use of the tie down points on my CR stiffeners so I appreciate having less restricted bed space at the sacrifice of tie points.

Sorry, that photo is of my friend Will's truck. I wasn't able to tackle that obstacle because I had ripped my t-case actuator off of the t-case.

I don't currently run one, it's on the short list, but I haven't had the time yet.

yea, the frame has a lot of flex, especially in the back. weight on the bed rails will put a lot of stress on the bed in these situations. I would install some bed stiffeners and get a professional to weld that back up.

So I’m going out this weekend, there will be some off-roading and driving on an FSR. Should I drill a 1/4” hole before I go out? My bed stiffeners are gonna come in sometime next week.

It won't hurt, but I wouldn't stress it too much, unless you plan on really thrashing your truck on washboard roads, etc.

If it's just a decently maintained FSR I would not drill the holes.

Thank you. I’ll just take it easy this time.:) There will be a portion where some flexing will be required though.

Do you think it’s necessary to drill holes before I install the stiffeners?
