With an old Reel Mower and a headlamp, you can mow whenever you want.

My father was ecologically conscious long before it was popular (and cheap too...) so we didn't have a gas mower.

In my youth I spent many hours sweating behind this "Silent" Scotts, not bad on a flat lawn that needs a trim -- absolutely brutal on any grade or a lawn that got long.

I mowed every lawn in a neighborhood filled with people who were either old, retired or dead -- all of them cheap!
One lady with a huge double lot would give me $2 and a stick of gum -- yes a stick, not a pack.

I would say that I feel you, but I cant. We had a tiny kidney bean shaped grass patch in Arizona where grass is a commodity amongst the xeriscaped "lawns" so it wasnt as big of an ordeal as you had but I loved our little push mower. With no bag the clippings would fling neatly into the air and land in little rows behind me. Our backyard was a little bit bigger but not by much.

That's pretty brutal right there but theres no arguing a reel mower puts a finer cut on the blade. If you want to grow turf, not grass, a reel is required.

I was lucky enough to have had a riding mower to use as a kid but one time I mowed in 6th gear, dad could tell, he asked me what gear I was in, I lied and said 4th. He said go ahead and mow it again in 4th.

We use a reel mower on our yard, but it has gear reduction, so it's a little easier to push

I have one of those mowers in the barn, I thought it would be a great way to get a little exercise cutting the grass right around the house. NOT

That lawn story reminds me of bagging groceries at the commissary. We had this one old lady that would drive in once a month from some distance way in an RV. She would get two or three full carts of groceries that would fill 16-24 brown paper bags. We'd haul them out and load them in her RV. We worked for tips only, and she would tip a quarter every time like it was still the 1950s.:censored: At the time, most people would tip .25¢ a bag.:annoyed:

Remains to be seen I bought the tires and wheels the rest came along
Nightmares now Grandma had a very small yard thank Odin.

The mower I doubt ever had the blades sharpened since it was new long before the dinosaurs came to be.

When that house was sold I was very happy.

I cheated today, only thing the Ferris needed was a grip cover for the hold down lever [which is a rectangle 1/8th by about 5/8's] for the blades. Of course they want a fortune for a little piece of formed plastic so I scrounged up some wire heat shrink plastic a bit bigger then the steel lever, cut it to length and applied heat. And presto, a basically free grip lever cover for the handle for a couple of cents. And it isn't going anywhere either, unless cut and pulled off, it's there for life.

He sounds like my Dad. Of course as soon as his ''free'' labor exited the household, he seemed to become less green and more carbon friendly as, if it put off carbon dioxide/monoxide, it was good to go as long as it made his life easier. Same for snow shoveling, it's amazing how fast a snowblower can replace kid power. Then they always exclaim ''boy, this thing sure makes getting rid of the snow easy!''
