2023 Tacoma 3.5 V6 Canister oil filter?

This just surprised me. Just seems weird! Haven't seen this on anything since working on some 1960's vehicle probably. This must be an Environmental move by Toyota?
Also curious if there have been any problems with this?? The element looks almost exactly
like what's in a spin on. Just figured one of you guys would know of any issues.
I will probably will let Toyota do first few changes. Don't have to worry about it for a little while yet. It came with like a two year maintenance deal including Synthetic oil.
Well see here soon if I can make myself let them put probably junk Toyota synthetic oil in there.
Mobil 1 Extended and a great filter usually well under $40. Usually what I use. Free is hard to pass up though.

I just replaced it with a spin on oil filter at the first oil change using a Baxter adapter. No issues.

 

The 2nd gen tundra had the cartridge oil filter and they did not seem to have any issues. If you are worried about the plastic housing breaking you can get a oem metal one (

15620-31060).

The canister filter has been in service on many models for years, no issues except people doing dumb things - just like always.

The Toyota branded oil is a high quality product made to their specifications.
It is manufactured by Mobil.

 

Just make sure to double-check what they do. I had my dealer put the oil change door on the TRD skid plate on backwards after an oil change so the front of the door was curved down towards the street instead of being flush against the skid plate. Glad I noticed it before I tore the thing off.

 

Stay away from the dealer. Look at the threads on here. Many choices to make it easier. Do it yourself. Done right the first time.

 

13 years later (from the 2010 4Runner) cartridge filters are still a surprise to you?

It was an environmental move 13 years ago, now no longer fashionable, so Toyota will go back to spin-on filters next week for the 4th gen Tacoma.

Carry on. There are bigger issues to complain about on our trucks, like the piece of shit drum brake mechanism.

 

these have been around for a loooong time, they work well. Don't fight this change, it isn't worth it.

 

how the hell does that even happen? There are counter sinks in the cover plate for crêpes sake.

If you have a dealer with older ASE techs as we do here, I wouldn't worry having it done under toyota care. After mine ended, it was way easy to change the oil myself. The toyota filter cartridges are simple to buy online....just be sure their the real toyota ones made in Thailand. You'll need the motivx oil housing tool also. For myself, disposing of the old oil was the longest part of the job.

 

the placement of the o'ring on the canister and torquing to the correct spec are very important for anyone that is new to this and changing the oil themselves.

 

Agree with inspecting your truck before leaving the dealership.

Open the hood and make sure all fluid caps are secure...the oil cap in particular.

Visually inspect the engine bay for anything out of place. Make sure tools were removed.

Walk around the vehicle and inspect tires, lug nuts, tire air caps, making sure no screws are wedged into the tires.

Lastly, inspect the underside of the truck. If you have an air dam, make sure the screws/bolts are properly secured. (I had 2 screwed in at an angle for the air dam)

Inspect skid plates and make sure no leaks are found at both oil filter area and the drain plug.

You may have service rep come out to you and ask if everything is ok.

Most customers don't do inspections and this comes as a surprise to service department personnel.

EDIT: I have the aluminum cannister and contemplating whether or not to install.

The metal canister has caused more issues than the plastic version. Plus I’d rather have the canister threads get jacked up over the engine! The key is to get a quality tool like the Motive socket that grips the canister much better than the Amazon cheap ones.

the 3.5L oil changes are actually easier than the 22re or even the 4.0 truck engines and less messy since you can drain the filter before you remove it.

 

I agree. Just did my first oil change on the tacoma. Always done my own for the past 30 years. However, I got small amount of oil seeping out of the middle of my TRD skid plate. Has to be residual oil from removing the filter housing is my guess but it was a clean process. No oil dripping from the filter or drain plug after multiple checks. Truck sat for 2 days after the oil change, I crawled under and took a peak and saw a little seepage from the slits in the skid prior to the drain plug hole. Cleaned it up, verified again no oil dripping from the drain plug or filter. Did a 30 mile trip today and some seepage showing up again in the same area. No leaks from oil drain plug or filter housing. Wiped it again and will check again. I may have to remove the skid for a better look.

 

Oil change is the last thing I’m worried about, even joe 6 packs can do it. Here is the real thing ; If any mechanical issues pops up while your truck is under warranty (2years/35000 miles ), you’ll have to have a proof of professional service/s, or you’ll have a hard time get it fix, this is what I’ve read in another forum some days ago. I personally will take my chances, and take it to dealerships for all services I can get while under warranty.

 

I'm the opposite with general maintenance. To many Joe 6 packs at the dealer not tightening bolts, loose drain plugs, incorrect amount of oil, no oil added, broken filter housing....the list goes on.

while i think most can learn how to do an oil change, i wouldn't trust and assume just any joe 6 pack to do it. it is not difficult, but it is important to use the proper tools and pay attention to the gaskets and torque specs.

as for the warranty, i do not believe you need proof of professional services, just documentation that it is done. i do my own maintenance and keep receipts, take photos of the work, and a log with the mileage, what was done, and the date. i do this not only to support a warranty claim but when/if i sell it, a prospective buyer likes to see this.

a final comment regarding professional services - in my professional work over many decades, i have seen, worked with, hired, and fired many professionals that claimed to have been doing the work for 10, 20, and 30 years. it turns out that many of them were doing it wrong all those years. "professional or certified" does not always mean the most knowledgeable, competent, and without mistakes.

i am confident i am at least as capable as any certified oil change tech, and i am less likely to rush the job and make a mistake.
