Also, update for those following along at home, I ended up using the local guy who replaces steerer tubes in forks. Local bike shop, very reputable and very well known in my area, told me he ran their suspension dept. for a long time. The mechanic working on my bike tells me his backstory and ends with, I’d trust him implicitly with my bike. Ok, sold. I took my fork to him, he pressed in a new steerer in about 20 minutes. He had a pretty good setup, not some shade tree BS, actual machined parts for every step. We’ll how it holds up over time!

Echo chamber... Don't.
I though I was fine, until I wasn't. Hit a lippy 10' table, got blown off into the weeds by a big side gust. Lots of bruises and a new helmet later, I find other trails on windy days.

 

Picked up a used 1up RakAttach.
Then proceeded to drill some holes in it so I could have it mounted closer to the bumper. The new hitch pin holes I drilled brought the rack 2.5" closer to the truck.
Now I can finally get stuff from the bed without taking my bike off.

 

One of my worst crashes ever was when trying a cross up in the wind. I landed off the trail when the wind took me way off the line. When it's windy, just pump the jumps.

 

This is a good idea! May have to do that, the swingaways do stick out rather far

 

I was thinking about grabbing 1 of those. They any good? I have a Fox full-gate pad. It's nice but my downtube is kind of big for the secure strap. And the bike will wobble a bit. So I use extra tie downs onto the D-ring to secure the bike. Also it's annoying handling around that big pad if it's just me. Plus my camera is covered etc. I thought that strap might be cool if I go out and am just hauling my 1 bike. This product seems to eliminate all of my complaints about my current pad.

 

I just installed the swing arm with my rack on it to make sure everything cleared. Used a punch to mark the center of the holes and drilled it out with a step bit to 5/8"
I painted the holes so once it dries I will post more pics

I could but I would rather the bike be secured and upright.

 

Ahh, I see. Well, there are plenty of diy option that are 6ft bed friendly. Ride88 style too.

Or MX style.

 

I have somehow planted the idea in my head that I want to do one of those '90s 26" mtb to gravel bike conversion thingies. This would be more for commuting, having as a friend bike, or just something to switch it up every once in a while. I already have a gravel bike, but its a little nicer than I'd like to leave outside unattended while at work, for example. The retro gravel/mtb would also be capable of plumper tires than my current gravel bike allows

Unfortunately, everyone seems to thing their clapped out trek is a gold mine. I found a bunch of parts that I'm interested in, but want to wait until I get a complete bike to start with before jumping on the parts for modernizing. Until then, I'll be scouring craigslist and fb marketplace for a neglected bike to bring back to life

 

About once a year, I run my chain and cassette through the ultrasonic cleaner to get the built up crud off. No scrubbing needed and works great.

 

pawn shops might have something on the cheap. not really a good way to look online that i know of
