Considering trading in my Tundra DC for a Tacoma with the 2.7. I need some insight.

Good day everyone. I currently drive a 2018 Tundra DC SR5 in 2WD. I owned the truck for almost two years now, and I have no complaints other than the bad gas mileage. I purchased this truck during the time when gas prices were fairly affordable here in CA, but the current gas prices are starting to get to me. My truck is my daily commuter, and my weekend warrior. I spend around $90 - $100 per week on gas, and this got me thinking of trading in for a Tacoma with the 2.7 4 cylinder engine. I realized that I don't utilize the capabilities 5.7 I-Force engine. By that I mean that I never tow, I rarely use the bed for utility, and I rarely use the performance capability of the V8. I know it is counter-intuitive to hyper mile a Tundra, but I tend to baby my acceleration and always cruise the speed limit on the highway to maximize my gas mileage. I looked around my Toyota Dealership when my truck was being serviced, and spoke to a sales manager who suggested to consider a Tacoma with the 2.7 4 cylinder engine. He told me it is certainly a good choice for a driver who wants car-like gas mileage, and does not need a heavy duty truck. He also told me that the 2.7 engine will be a lot cheaper to maintain in the long run, and that the transmission and the engine itself is simpler, more reliable, and fuel efficient than the 3.5 v6. I am looking for opinions from actual owners. Hope to hear from you all soon. Thank you.

    Welcome to the forum :hattip:

The 2.7 is a great engine. That said the Tacoma is a heavy ride, test drive both I believe you will be happier with the V6.

BTW: No Tacoma gets "car like" gas mileage...

The 2.7 will prob. only get 5 more mpg. If you have a dependable maintained truck, keep it.

4 cylinder is okay. Gas mileage is so so.

Tacoma and car-like gas mileage?:rofl::rofl:

If you want to save fuel, buy a Prius.

The 2.7l in the Tacoma is a great engine. But a bit on the slow side. Wouldn’t upgrade to one to save fuel or maintenance costs. Your Tundra should run for a long time.

I couldn’t make it through that ginormous paragraph but if MPG’s is your goal, I’d look elsewhere if changing vehicles to do so.

I live at or below sea level and my 2.7 4x4 3rd gen access cab gets ever so slightly less mileage than my 2012 vw 2.5 jetta.

It's a great engine if you're not at altitude. And yes super cheap and easy to maintain.

That said...if.your daily driving involves lots of hills, your mileage will probably be the same as 3.5 Taco

Keep the Tundra, the 3rd gen tacoma (especially auto trans) is unpowered and has horrible gas mileage considering.
Wait for the 4th gen major improvements

That salesman saw an opportunity to get a Tundra on trade and sell a new tacoma. Car like gas mileage lol

Sounds like you don't really need a truck. Get a hybrid if you want good mpg

3rd gen Tacoma with 2.7L motor might just be the slowest new vehicle you can buy in the US. Just saying.

What are 2.7l Tacomas getting for “real world mileage”?

My question is to you? You mentioned you don't tow or use bed of truck. Why a truck? If your looking for fuel mileage. Get an hybrid suv.

Here’s a different viewpoint. It may not be better gas mileage than a car, but you will get better gas mileage with the 2.7 than the 5.7 so you will save on fuel costs. The 2.7 is a slug but it’s bulletproof like the 5.7. Maintenance will be cheaper and you’ll have a truck bed if you need it. It sounds like you don’t care about the power so if you test drive it and like it, go for it. Just make sure you get what you deserve for the Tundra.

If you are looking for a daily ride "truck" with car like MPG, why not look at a ford Maverick.

I just recently traded in my 2022 Tacoma for a 2018 Tundra, wish I had sooner. The extra room and power is awesome and the ride is so much quieter. The taco was loud until I installed sound deadening. I only noticed about 2mpg worse, it's not much different. If you're just looking for something for better mileage, a car is best. SUV will offer some utility and better gas mileage still. If you need a truck still though, I personally wouldn't trade down.

Having owned mine four 4 years now I'm getting 17/18 around town, on the interstates I'm getting 23/24. My best road trip mileage was 26mpg, a flat road doing 55/60. That being said the 2.7 maybe slow but it's no slug. The throttle response in stock form is horrid. I put a Banks pedal monster on mine and it's fantastic to drive now, throttle response is now near instantaneous. It drives like a completely different truck.
