its the first time i pulled a dipstick on our trucks as a note but it looked to be fine and above the line directly after but the next day it seemed low. there wasnt a ton of oil on the bottom of the truck and when it sat overnight there wasnt a puddle on the driveway.

sorry for the initial pen of that comment, I guess I had a stroke typing it.

Yep, sure sounds like a human error deal. I've already heard enough stories where shops used the wrong oil wrench to remove, or tighten those filter housings, and cracked them in the process creating leaks.

UPDATE: spoke with the service manager yesterday and she said they found no damage and that they ordered a new sensor and a couple gaskets and that these items were not items they stock. I should have it back next week. She added that they found no metal flake in the oil. I may have been mistaken I guess but Ill be bringing a magnet when I pick it up and running it down the dipstick.

I'm very curious which gaskets they are replacing.

Could be worth installing a magnet drain plug to verify. Lots of posts on here about folks having a hard time reading 3rd gen dipstick due to the light weight oil and color

Grab some pics next time if you see anything suspicious. The fact that it had oil on the stick, above the low mark, is a good sign. Even better that nothing dripped on your driveway overnight.

Awesome, this sets me more at ease and yeah I'm not gonna lie I felt a little humbled when I pulled the dipstick and I had a hard time reading it lol. It had oil on it up past the bottom dot and up past the top dot too so I figured I was safe.

did i miss what the source of the leak was? are they saying the low oil pressure was due to a faulty sensor?

yes and the oil on the bottom of the engine was residual from the last oil change. I will say its plausible because it really wasn't a lot.

If you're happy, so be it. Should've taken your own sample. You either did or you did not find metal flakes in your oil - thats not an easy mistake to misjudge. Now all that evidence is washed away. Maybe you did just overreact. But if you didn't, you'd be crazy to believe that they're blaming low oil light on a bad sensor AND replacing gaskets. What explains the metal flakes? What about the different sound coming from the engine? Everything you described is what you get when you run a truck too low on oil (because of an oil leak).

Yeah I'm concerned and will be running a magnet over the dipstick when I get up there to take it back. Also as long as this gets documented and all that Ill be happy I guess because I'm under 2 warrantees and if it happens again it'll get fixed again. just super annoying and frustrating.

Yeah when I heard metal flakes....hard to misjudge that. Bad sensors can happen, but it's very rare you'll see one as such on a new engine. I can't even comment on the gaskets...did they say which ones they replaced?

Not trying to be argumentative, just playing devils advocate for your sake - it will get documented, but not how you want. Documented to say "gasket cut/replaced with new/oil change; oil sensor changed; etc" with nothing about metal flakes, knocking sound, etc.

I don't want to say its too late to act concerned, but they've already flushed it with new oil, so you're not gonna find anything of value running a magnet down the dipstick tube to skim the most top layer of the new oil. All I can say is if you start back driving home from the dealer and its sounding funny, drive the absolute shit out of it til it blows lol.

If it does anything at all abnormal after picking it up Id drive it right back. Minimize damage while documenting everything to show a trend, in case it does escalate down the road.

Obviously take it back, I was making a joke about driving it hard to give them something to find this time. They'll brush it under the rug every time so long as it still runs and appears/sounds fine from the outside. We're going off of OP's claims (to have found metal flakes all over the dipstick). I wouldn't be looking for trends of metal flakes; I'd be politely demanding a teardown (unless I was overreacting about actually finding metal flakes). This is pretty much textbook Rannyhill's story. Thankfully he didn't take no for an answer every time and stuck to his guns. He ended up in a new truck, and who knows who ended up buying his old damaged truck that they just flushed with oil and called good. Maybe OP :anonymous:

Edit: Because that could be a real possibility, I looked back through Ranny's thread. He did in fact have a 2021! He took pictures down I believe, but I recall it being white as well o_O Ranny offloaded the clunker in Sep 2022 - OP bought in May 2023, its not completely implausible! OP you happen to be located in GA or the southeast US? :anonymous:

Edit to the edit: NVM, Ranny had a 2021 Sport; OP has an OR. Bullet dodged!

I figured / hoped you were joking. I really dont think theres much anyone here can do besides armchair quarterback until OP gets his truck back. It will either run good - or it wont.

*SO UPDATE* after reading through everything I was curious on what seals they were replacing so I gave them a ring. I get the service manager and I ask which seals and she responds "yeah thats where we were but, when we opened it up we found what the actual cause was"

My oil pump decided to identify as a grenade.

    oil pump 1.jpgoil pump 2.jpg

sorry about the orientation I cant seem to get them to upload right.

But yeah, it even cracked the timing cover when it blew. So were waiting on a new pump and timing cover now.

I asked about more damage and she said it didn't skip timing so I think I'm good.
