Well that will sure cause low oil pressure!! That material sure looks aluminum so a magnet wouldn't do you much good. I would be concerned about shavings/chunks getting sucked up by the pump and thrown through the journals before that pump said goodbye. Glad they spent the time to diagnose properly...they sure pulled that engine fast (you have to pull the engine to get the timing cover off). I would definitely send an oil sample to blackstone after they are done and again after a few thousand miles to see if any wear is indicated.

holy shit! Glad they put some real diagnosis in! A bit odd they didnt call you first though haha

But once the pump blew up there wouldn't be any oil moving..

Wow; I'm actually really happy for you that they did a full diagnosis and didn't just send you out the door with a new oil change, bc it seemed you were second guessing whether or not you knew something was off. Props to them for actually taking the time. And while people will chime in and say some of us are dumb for expecting anything more than an oil change, this is exactly why. Glad you have those warranties!

yeah same. part of it is my inexperience with this platform. this is my first tacoma and truck in general. id be more confident in sticking to my guns if this were my focus because after 9 years i knew that thing in and out.

That is correct but failure mode analysis would say something caused that to go bad...possibly a bearing that would inject material in the oil prior to failure. With the tight tolerances in these engines, a small bearing sliver can cause issues later.
You will need a baseline for your engine so I would send a sample as soon as you get the truck back and then a sample in a few thousand miles to compare.

put sone masking tape about an inch anode the full mark. Burnish the end of the dipstick with scotchbrite or sand paper.

Doing so will make the level much easier to read

Do a sacrificial oil change day one when you get it back. Sample. Repeat in 1-2000 miles. Sample. Again at 5 or 10000 miles. Blackstone is legit. Tell then a short story of why you are sending the first sample and they will review each time a new sample comes in.

I would be seriously concerned for the main and rod bearings after that failure. Lack of oil pressure and steel particles. They really should pull a couple and inspect.

Maybe they replaced the oil pressure sensor first only to find still no oil pressure after running it some, then decided to dig in further. I'd be real worried in that case, you'll likely have metal fillings throughout the entire engine already, just waiting to do real some real damage down the road.

    **UPDATE**

Went through Blackstone as suggested and got my results back yesterday. I can post the PDF if anyone is interested but basically my oil was high in silicone and aluminum, the tech's explanation stated that the silicone and some of the aluminum is most likely due to the brand new oil pump and seals installed. they said those levels should fall with the next oil change but the aluminum content should be monitored closely.

Your fuel is in fact a little high at .5% I have seen a few others and they are lower for fuel over time.
My iron was 19 and copper at 66... and my silicone at 214... and that was on my last TRD PRO at 2980 miles fuel was also .5

Cool, thanks for the info. I'll make sure to post the results next oil change. It may be a while as I don't drive a ton anymore.
