1st Gen speaker options?

Looking to replace the stock Toyota Logic factory radio with a Pioneer. Whats my best options to replace the door and rear speakers? Should I look into a under the seat sub for a little more base?

Crutchfield.com has an abundance of speaker options to chose from. Luckily their website is very user friendly and helps you filter out speakers based on what your end goal is like budget, amp usage, etc. You can do what I did and actually live chat with one of their techs about what you want. I talked with Mulligan and I let him actually pick out a bunch of stuff and put it in my shopping cart for me to look at. This is what he went with for me.

 

you're options are only limited by your budget and how long you can have the truck torn apart for the install.

brands: everyone's got their favorite. none are the best, and none are the worst, though many will argue either point. they are all functional for the cost put into it(aka, point #1), but they also all have a different 'tone', or sound characteristic. what you desire sets the pace for what speakers work the 'best'.

you can choose to keep to car audio specific brands, which will strive to be universally compatible with the factory speaker openings, though adapters are usually needed anyways with these trucks(not sure on the 1st gen). the design parameters for these generally ensure a quick effort for a quick benefit. you can also choose to branch out to non-car-specific custom speakers like tang band, dayton, etc, and build your own setup that's far more unique and custom-tailored for what you desire.

as far as underseat subs, they're generally underwhelming to me. a set of great quality door speakers with a decent head unit can far surpass the bass output by those underseat subs.

crutchfield is a great 'click-order-install' site. they've got a support line if you run stuck, and will include all wiring adapters and mounting adapters needed for the install. they've also got installation instructions for most vehicles. but all of those 'bonus' items don't come for free. and they also don't get into extremely custom stuff involving adding amps, or active speaker processing.

crutchfield is going to cost about 20-40% more than individually ordering and researching each component yourself, sometimes more, as they're authorized resellers for every brand they sell. for a research-hog like myself, it's extremely easy to halve the out-the-door crutchfield price on most hardware, depending on what you're willing to 'sacrifice'(do you need the authorized reseller branding/pricing/warranty, or is the ebay/Amazon/3rd-party-site buyer/seller, or credit card guarantee enough? do you need the customer support line? do you need the install instructions? do you really need every adapter they're sending?)

it all comes down to how much you want to spend, what kind of install you desire.
