they are predicting my apartment to wash away in the spring floods, so I may be doing some extended living in my camping gear in the near future... which doesn't really bother me to much at all.

not sure what work is going to say about the whole not showering thing, but I'll cross that road when I get to it.

Can anybody recommend any backpack to go hiking, I've always camp but I'm gonna get into hiking now. And also, what to take when going hiking?
    Thanks.

welcome to the thread:D what kind of hiking are you gonna do? mountain, flat land. how many days are you staying out? I think the best bang for your buck is gonna be a kelty pack. and if your just getting into it i would say a kelty coyote or a kelty redclound. thoes are very comfertable packs and they pretty affordable

I have a pack that is 5000 cubic inches and that thing is huge. i can easliy pack a a week in that pack. imt thinkin you should go with a kelty redcloud. they are very nice packs. It just all depends on whats fits you good and how you pack. some pack heavier than others. I dont really pack light but i pack effecient so i can put a lot into a small space. I would just go to your local outdoor store and try on some packs.

I totally agree, I have a kelty redcluds 5600 that I've been using for about 7 years now. I have abused it and dropped it off cliffs and down hills and even into a lake once, and there has been no lasting damage.

Really the only problem is it's too big, if you are planning on using it for small trips. I moved to Europe for 5 months and only brought what fit in that pack, and I was absolutely fine.

I just bought a smaller pack, on Osprey, somewere around 2200 CI if I remember, that has been the perfect weekend pack so far. No issues with quality and it fits me better than the Kelty, but that's just personal preference, I wouldn't hesitate to weigh either down and wear them for a week.

I am going to have to check that out.
I love my external frame Kelty Tioga 5500. You can score them fairly cheap now. I have been eyeballing the Kelty Redcloud packs for a while now and a Gregory Palisade 80. I just went backpacking with a guy that had the Gregory and said it was extremely nice. The back padding on it was worlds better than my Kelty and I think mine is pretty comfy.

A tip for you, check the pack out in the store... Then go online and buy it. A few good places I have found are:

    Gearx.com
    Campsaver.com
    REI.com
and when you can find something decent, ebay, but i very rarely use ebay.

Go to a REI, if you have one, most employees there can help if you tell them what you need. most packs adjust to your size, and what you are going to be hiking. good luck, have fun.

^^ that. I wandered around REI for about an hour trying out different packs. They load them up with sand bags so you can get a feel for the pack and let you roam around. I actually ended up picking out a different pack than what I thought I wanted - once I got some weight in it it wasn't very comfortable.

Alright guys/gals. I am looking for some reviews on some decent backpacking shoes. I am looking for something like the Merrell Moab Ventilator. Possibly something water resistant if I happen to step in a puddle or something.

    These are the Merrell's

    Anyone got any ideas?

I think this has been discussed before but I figured I would bring it back up for anyone getting ready to update their feet for this season

I love Merrell's - super tough and comfy. I have high arches and its hard to find shoes that support my feet properly. I have the Moab Gore Tex. I wear them year round, they can be a little too warm in the summer but I need the heavier, stiffer material to keep my foot and ankle stable. These are somewhat water proof as well - you can't stand in water and expect to keep your feet dry but I've been out in wet, snowy conditions and they don't leak
