I’m cutting the swim team. I’ve won twice and I’m good.

First time I saw a 3rd gen in person was at the Overland Expo in 2015 before it was available for sale.
This was back when the expo wasn't as big as it is now, too.
I wouldn't be suprised to see the new Tacoma there.

Yep, the Trailhunter DblCab and an access cab Prerunner.

I didn't particularly care for the chase rack in the Dbl Cab, made it look too much like an avalanche. Otherwise, looked good. The 2.4 turbo just doesn't seem like it would pull a small camper across the country. Wonder how hot that housing would get pulling up from BCC to Sunset Pt. In the summer. I mean, they were probably tested there, with TPG being not so far away.

Is it really winning if there's no other swim teams to compete against?

You know I cling to some semblance of that bitter illusion of hope. I think this reveal shows that Toyota did perk up and take note that they kind of phoned in the 3rd gen and it was no longer the de facto champ of the segment just for being a Tacoma.

I've already said it but provided the 4 banger can actually survive off road abuse it's going to be much better than the 3.5. The hybrid option is great, literally giving exactly what segment buyers want which is more low end grunt and better MPG.

I also dig the OEM wheel selections so far. One thing I am kinda boggled by though is split leaf / coil on the lineup. That's weird! Is making two separate axles and frames economical enough to make up for the $$$ saved on some coils? Or will there be conversions because there are hangars for both on the frame, and maybe even the axles too.

I can almost guarantee you its the auto LSD. It's far cheaper to add some logic to brake solenoids and wheel speed sensors than actually make any kind of mechanical LSD, and it never wears out or requires friction modifiers in the gear oil.

There have always been at least 2 different rear axles on Tacomas so thats nothing new and the way platforms are so modular these days its as simple as bolting a few different brackets on the frame to mount the links instead of leafs. I think its much easier than you realize.

Yeah good point, I forgot it's not just a 3rd member swap for locked vs non locked. I guess they already have that baked into their efficiency calculations.

The coil vs leaf though, all those are weldments or rivets. IIRC Shackle hangars are riveted in, T4R trailing arm mounts are welded on, etc. etc.

I know lots of auto companies split hairs over seconds on the assembly lines. It makes more sense though considering Toyota doesn't do build to order, they do "fuck you, you can ask for an allocation and when we decide to run it, then you'll get it" so they probably tool up one line for a bunch of the same thing and run it, then retool that line to something else and roll through the permutations they've decided to make.

There are two factories in mexico that build tacomas so I bet one will build the TRD and up trucks and the other will build the poverty spec models.

remember to make sure you do your wiring correctly when adding accessories y’all. This poor elderly gentleman just lost everything he owned due to faulty wiring.

Towed 8k miles and valley of the gods and gooseneck state park were big highlights of the trip. TBH southern Utah was amazing, did a crazy deep sand duney drive down to a pink sand slot canyon in Kanab, amazing. Crazy long sandy drive to White Pocket (Vermillion cliffs) another world (we took the scenic arc route there and descended a really steep sand dune to get to the location and knew we had no chance of making it back up, thankfully found another way back that was way easier)
