2nd gen resale is already pretty dang high. In particular, the 4WD TRD models and especially the 2.5 gen 4WD TRD models have pretty high resale. At least this is the case in the area I live.

I have had a few people approach me and ask if I would be interested to sell. My response is always “ that would be a terrible financial move on my part”

Older Turbo in the Toyota etc sure. New Turbos No Thanks. The reliability of them is questionable. Sure, maybe once they get the issues worked out if them, and hopegilky you dont hzve a failure after the warranty has run out.. $300 won't buy you a turbo replacement on a new engine.
Plus my comment had nothing to do with olderToyota Turbo equipped engines. It was obviously meant towards the new ones. The unproven ones!!!
I dont feel like being the unlucky one to get one with issues. Even down the road.
Shall l even mention that in some places in the world replacing a Turbo costs a small fortune!!
Yes. There are other parts of the world outside of the U.S. Believe it or not. $300 wouldn't even cover the shipping and duty!!!!

Indeed. You'd have to shell out big time for another and be faced with wait times... I'll keep on enjoying the "no truck payments" life thankyouverymuch.

When people offer to buy my truck, I tell them $40k. I don't want to sell, but that would clear up all my debts, and leave me with enough for an older Rav4 and a down payment for a house.

It doesn't matter to me. My '06 170K mile OR is my last truck. I just moved it from daily driver work truck to recreation, camping, kayak, yard hauler. I, fingers crossed, can put another 100k on it over the next 15 years and both of us will be done. Whatever maintenance it will need, it will be way cheeper than buying an any newer Tacoma while continuing to fulfill its destiny. And I will have had 25+ years of zero truck payment.

An OEM replacement Garrett turbo for my 06 Duramax was over $1200 just for the turbo. Would have probably been a solid $1500 in labor if I hadn't done it myself. The only turbo you're getting for $300 is going to be straight from China and the impeller and/or bearing is going to explode in a few thousand miles sending metal chunks into your engine. When it comes to quality turbos they are expensive and I do agree that a quality turbo is reliable, but the fact of the matter is that it is an additional failure point and you have to include the oil lines, coolant lines (if the particular application has them for the turbo), intercooler, BOV (if not variable geometry), and hot and cold side tubing. Bottom line imo, naturally aspirated engines have less failure points than comparable turbo charged engines.

lol its fun reading threads like these. where people argue what is better. n/a or turbo.

i imagine back in the day, people were arguing the same thing, where a 1970 Cadillac had a v8 7.0 liter engine and the owner would talk smack about the upcoming civic. how it would not have enough power to get up the driveway, and not be reliable.

im sure that the new 4 cylinder turbos will be great. its made by Toyota. a huge company who is famous for having reliable cars. im sure they did lots of testing and research.

as far as the value of 2nd gen trucks, the prices will probably slowly go down, since we are driving them and putting miles on our trucks. but there is a limit. i dont think the 2nd gen will ever drop below $10k-$12k.

Toyota made a 4 cyl turbo in 86 and 87 I think. They were bulletproof and reliable. I had mine over 15 yrs. No problems

Ford set it all in motion when they went to EcoBoost. But the plus side of turbos being more common means supplier competition will be fierce to make a reliable model and to offer it at a good price.

About 2 months ago i totaled my 07 4x4 4.0 with just shy of 170k. It was overall in "good condition". I was really hoping their insurance insurance give me as close to 10k as possible. Well to my suprise i got check for 19,550. And about 1 week ago i got a call from a sales manager at one of the Toyota dealerships asking if id be interested in trading my tacoma in or outright selling it to them. Said the 2nd gens, especially preface lift ones are gaining value like crazy right now. Like how the first gen Tundras are skyrocketing in value rightnow. So yah i know for sure they are gaining value right now

My dad likes my pre-facelift Tacoma because it's "one of the last proper looking trucks ever built.“

I got a 2013 last week with 100K on the clock, loads of preventive service records, one owner (who was obviously an older dude since the tires were Michelin LTX M/S2). Did I pay a premium? Perhaps, but I collect guns and sometimes the deal is being able to get the item at all (like a shotgun that had less than 30 made total). I drove into see it, in a 2006 Frontier suffering from multiple organ failure and signed on the dotted line. (The dealer was a small family owned outfit I’d been treated well at before). Retired I drive wel under 5K a year and wanted a “forever” truck. Could not be happier.

The part about getting the item is huge. Call it FOMO or whatever but if you find what you want and it's not easy to find, paying the money is almost always the best option in my book especially for a need item like transportation..

Says the guy who drove 5-6 hours 2 states over to buy an old bicycle, of course....
