Its mostly to clean up iron staining. Normally I dont do these agates, but this one is a little ugly in the middle so I am considering it. Oxalic acid is like iron out but cheaper to get the pure stuff off Amazon than buy iron out if you do a lot of rocks. I mostly use the acid bath on quartz crystals and geodes. I use a 5 quart crockpot, add rocks and put a little less than 1/4 cup of acid powder and fill with water, then cook on low 24 hours. Its like magic for iron staining.

You should see the outside collection. It's ridiculous.

Off the saw last night and shown wet. Material from SW Washington. I believe it is a seam of grey banded agate after calcite.

I won't show the wife this thread. We will be up in that area this summer. I can see it now:

Wife's mind "3800 lbs load capacity in truck...rocks weigh xxx, I can hide xxx rocks before he notices..."

Can any of you “rockhounds” tell me what these are?
I won them playing marbles ~55 years ago, thought they were interesting so I kept them. Always thought they were some kind of rocks. Thanks.

Your wife's type of thinking is the reason I'm considering a rear leaf spring upgrade (I'm stock). Gotta be able to carry more rocks!

Some more I recently finished cleaning. Pyrite crystals and partially pyritized snail fossil from Oregon coast beach. Pretty sure this is not an Astoria formation fossil as it came out of sandstone not the Asotria formation mudstone.20230515_180732.jpg 20230515_182307.jpg

I was at an event with my brother in Moab. We ended up breaking and decided to head back to Montana early to drop off his rig. We get a call from my wife that she is in Idaho with her family and "swing" by to pick her up.

She said there might be a few rocks coming home with us. We get there and the "few" rocks took up the bed of my 3/4 ton and the first four feet of the trailer. Those were the days...being a DINK

I have a masters degree in geology and still don’t get this hobby. I used to watch my classmates collect all sorts of weird ass minerals and stuff. Their places were full of heavy lumps of worthless materials and I never got why owning it was better than just going “huh that’s kinda neat” and then dropping it.

Maybe it’s my color blindness. Maybe it’s the flashbacks to phase diagrams and birefringence in mineralogy. Maybe it’s because I much prefer sed/strat. But…

No fossils, no care! I want the dead critters! Dinosaur National Monument to Fossil Butte is a great drive for us paleontologists.

(I’m half kidding, all rocks are cool)

I did a backpacking trip to Big bend in Texas and they have a cool fossil exhibit out on the flats north of the mountains. It was pretty sweet, esp considering I had no idea that was a big fossil area.

I'm using a Highland Park 14 inch slab saw. Oil cooled.

Zeolite (Natrolite, maybe mixed with some Scolecite, I think) spray, from Doty Hill. Still needs cleaning as I pulled it our of the vug today.20230520_163424.jpg

The price has gone up since I purchased, and rockhounding/lapidary is one of my primary hobbies. Some do major mods to their trucks - I've got rocks in my brain bucket.:D
