2018 off road diff oils??

I've read many posts that our 3rd gens dont need the limited slip additives, but how come most of the oils have some type of limited slip additives in them? I've looked at mobil 1, valvoline, redline, and amsoil. Planning to do my front and rear diffs for the first time, as im about 39,xxx miles.

75w-90.

Leaning towards valvoline or amsoil since they have the easy pouches now. Likely will go with vavoline full synthetic since they are a bit cheaper compared to amsoil. Any issues with these gear oils with limited slip additives/modifiers in our 3rd gens?

 

Truck calls for 75w 85. Redline makes that. Why choose something else?

Seems like more vehicles require slip additive than those that don't. It makes it a more versatile product for the seller.

75w-90 severe gear oil has always worked well in my gen1 tundra even doing many 1k mile round trips towing.

 

X2 on the Redline, that's what I'm using. If I read the OP's vehicle correctly, he has a rear locker same as mine. Redline is almost local to me so I may be a bit biased. The one thing I don't like is the Redline bottle, it does not receive a manual pump well, the neck is too narrow. I do use a manual pump, but it collapses the bottle as I pump, thus I have to relieve the suction often.

 

Choice is all yours and all will work just fine. I use Amsoil and have for 30+ years and never an issue with anything and have seen some pretty amazing stuff using it.

 

I’ve used M1 75w90 with no issues. Doesn’t really matter.

 

The limited slip additive just makes the gearoil a little more slippery the allow clutch packs slip in limited slip diffs. It does no harm to run in an open diff. Main reason it's in alot of gear oils now is to appeal to people that forget or don't know to add it to their oil when it's changed.

 

+1 amsoil severe gear. Best on the market and priced fairly, unlike their motor oil.

I can't remember exactly where I read (maybe a YouTube video also) it but I believe the differentials aren't true limited slip. They're built in a way to mimick LSD, so therefore any gear oil that meets spec is fine regardless if it has LSD additives.

The switch to 75w85 was for fuel efficiency, the 75w90 will offer better protection especially under load.

 

Well, when you run a little longer change intervals and use their high capacity filters the price becomes very reasonable. I swear by their transmission fluid also.

 

I use their transmission fluid also, zero issues and immediately made our Highlander smoother. It's safe to say everything they make is some of the best there is.

I don't think I can bring myself to do extended intervals though. Even 10k mile intervals bothers me. I stick with 3k-5k miles depending on how we drive. My wife enjoys going to the spa now and then for a massage because it's quiet and relaxing. Me? I'll change the oil well ahead of schedule, for the exact same reasons. My driveway even gives me a back massage.

I use the BG ultra guard LS 75W90 for front and rear Differentials. The stuff is amazing. I change it every 30k. Very little metal on magnet. It is GL-5 and has limited slip additives. My rear diff humm vanished when I started using it.

 

you dont need the ls additives bc we dont have ls diffs.

Correct. The rear differentials are open. With a locker in them if you have the off-road version. The system utilizes the brakes to act like clutches in the rear differential.
