I have never driven an older WRX or STI (04-14), so I don't have any comparison for the newer 2016 (but have driven plenty of older Subarus at work, and well, it takes someone special to keep an 06 Forester on the road o_O). Personally I think brother's WRX rides very firm, but it makes sense for what the car is. I have driven a couple manual 2015+ WRX at work, and the CVT version is much faster, but obviously not as fun to drive.

I didn't know that about the wheels, how did they bolt those wheels (04 STI BBS) to a 2015+ WRX? Using adapters I assume...

Is your brother’s modified? The mags had the CVT way slower.

The firm ride won’t bother me, the STi was like getting kicked in the kidneys the entire drive.

As far as the wheels, 02-14 WRX and the 2004 STi used 5x100 wheels, the 05+ STi and 15+ WRX are 5x114.3. So while the design is the same, the wheels differed in bolt pattern and width. The early ones were 7.5” wide and the later 8” wide.

I edited my post after I looked at it closer. I then responded to Nick and didn’t delete your tag, my bad.

The only time I drove it, it was completely stock, he has since added a cat back exhaust and a Cobb tuner (I don't think he ever did anything too aggressive with the tuner).

I think the biggest difference is when you have to shift a manual car, you lose boost and that drop in rpm, where as the CVT can keep the motor in its powerband. The manual might actually be faster, it just felt like the CVT was faster in the seat of the pants feel. Even with that, I would rather have the 6 speed just because that is what should be in the car.

I miss understood you about the wheels, people are just buying 05+ STI wheels for the later WRXs, I don't understand how I didn't comprehend that :frusty:! I will have to see if my brother is interested in those wheels, since he is not a big fan of the dark grey 18s that came from the factory with his car.

Warning, pointless bitching about nothing that matters:

I can't help but reflexively roll my eyes so far back in my head they hurt when I hear/read people hand wringing and tutting about resale value, and the pending 4th gens have a ton of that type of person absolutely sweating blood about their 3rd gens.

I understand the thought process that leads people to value their purchased vehicle as an "asset", and yes, according to basic accounting principles, it's technically an asset... But they're awfully shitty stores of value especially when they're encumbered by financing and subject to unavoidable depreciation, often significant and immediate upon delivery. Don't even get me started on what I think when advertisements/propaganda refer to your daily as an "investment".

I also get that a lot of people prefer, for various reasons, to trade in every few years, and count on resale/trade-in to buffer their next finance, but I won't climb up on my soapbox about the hedonic treadmill and conspicuous consumption or the hazards of structural debt.

There are plenty of anecdotal "Well I sold it for what I paid for it six years ago!" or whatever due to recent anomalous market conditions, but that's like selling anything in a seller's market if you need to replace it - everyone else's is up too, so if you need to buy, you're not coming out ahead.

All I've gotten out of those threads is that my 2016 (first year of the model) should have burned down 7 years ago. The fact it hasn't is impossible and I'm a turrible liar that it hasn't and clearly it's been in the shop every day of its life with each individual system failing. I'd break their brains and post I still have the original battery in it but I've been told not to lie on the Internet or something.

2016 here, can attest to this hahaha. The reality is is this truck has been the most trouble-free vehicle I've ever owned, and not for lack of trying on my end either. I can't imagine living my life that stressed out about a) a truck that isn't even out yet and b) preserving resale value on a depreciating asset so you can what, buy the truck you're already shit talking with the truck you spent the last 7 or 8 years shit talking?

Yeah not unless you would have been selling it anyway because your needs changed or you perhaps inherited something else to drive on the free/real cheap.

I looked a little at resale when I was trying to flip something or just drive it a few months and sell/trade up. I could have cared less buying my truck 11 years ago that it's the last type of Tacoma people want around here. It did what I needed..and since I had a 5 yr payment I figured on keeping it long haul, which is now reinforced by the fact I can't buy another regular cab truck.

Meh some people just aren't happy unless they're complaining about something. Mine should have blown up from oil supply issues because of the one use case if you're at like a 45 degree angle and hammering on it for a while, the oil will flow is interrupted and the engine blows up.

It's happened to like 5 trucks.

:notsure: mine likes to scream on incline in cruise control. Otherwise rides fine, rides like a leaf sprung truck, gets the mileage of a leaf sprung truck, and I'm happy with it.

I love my new truck but miss my Tacoma
It's funny that I usually think about my needs in a vehicle as power steering, power brakes (I'm old enough to remember when those were optional), power windows/locks (those too), cruise control and AC. Plus my thought that every vehicle sold in the northeast should come with heated mirrors I don't really NEED anything else.

BUT,,, seeing all the stuff that the new taco comes with (or shall I say could be optioned with) has me kinda wanting one all decked out!

Depending on msrp, tempted.. But I'd rather let other people figure out the quirks for the next few years. Until then, I'm gonna keep tinkering

Honestly I feel like if you want to look at it as cost of ownership, the people who trade it in every few years probably only pay like $1000-1500/year via value lost (excluding of course insurance, gas etc)
