    Genuine question here...

what exactly does it mean to get on preorder? I don't know how Toyota works in this regard. My only recent experience is with Audi. When I ordered my TTRS in 2017, the dealership first needed an allocation for it. Then I was able to fill out an order form building the car precisely to my liking. Then it was a matter of time for it to be built and shipped to the States. No money was exchanged until the day it arrived and I went to do the usual car sales paperwork.

Would like to know more about how this works with Toyota. The changes to the MY24 Tacoma are just interesting enough to consider it; depending upon what official pricing is set at.

Pretty much what Toyota does. The salesman is basically humoring the previous poster and all other people with the game. Toyota builds what it wants to build, not by a list of "preorders". Each dealer gets an allocation of vehicles. The bigger selling dealers get more. Dealers get notified what is headed their way. Salesman tries to match whichever is close to what a customer wants. If what they have coming doesn't match they can request a trade with another dealer that does. That is probably why some request some money down. So their effort is likely to be rewarded.

Edit: It helps to be flexible. When my salesman told me what was coming, some of the accessories were not to my liking. Don't flip out. You can sell the stuff you don't want because there is a HUGE trade/buy/sell market with Tacomas.

These prices are not random, they are calculations and very good ones at that. I was within $400 on the 2022 Tundra; in fact, I calculated the 2022 TRD PRO to start at $66,800 and it started at $66,805 (the 2021 Tundra TRD PRO was $53,400). The hybrid feature raises the price on the upper trim levels by a good bit. The difficult numbers are at the bottom- SR are kept low for entry level pricing purposes and are difficult to know. These prices are within 2%.

I have a feeling the Pro will be more expensive than the Trailhunter. I could see the Pro costing $62-$64k. I will definitely be happy if its less though.

Knowing this when I got my truck I chose to search for exactly what I wanted and not settle. It helped that dealers were afraid of MT trucks so they would sell to an out of state customer. The domestics and Europeans have it much better, if Toyota went to custom orders so many people would be happy but it is what it is.

I agree!! It’s easy to sell also if you have the title to your vehicle. The dealers want to rake you over the coals.

So I currently have a 2011 in really good condition and I'm torn between privately selling it and then going to buy a new '24 but my issue is I want it so specific I honestly doubt I'm gonna get one. I want a '24 Trd pro loaded but nothing unpainted no black wheel flares or mirrors black. I do want the roof section painted black. I want some of the Trailhunter parts but not the whole vehicle. I know its being super picky but if I'm going to spend $50k+ on a new truck I feel it should be at least 90% accurate to my liking. The Trd decal on the bed is weak so id probably replace those on my own. So is this possible? And does anyone agree? Paying these days prices should also offer more customizable features.

Yes. I had the title to my 2017, found an excited buyer quickly. He brought his Dad to check it out with him. I met him the next day at his Credit Union where they printed me out a cashiers check and I signed the title to the bank, took the check straight to my bank. Was a very easy process!

So what’s your thoughts? Are you going to jump on the band wagon and give up your 20 Pro for a 24? I no longer have a Tacoma. Had many of them. Then 4runner Pro’s. I still follow all the Toyota forums. Not sure if I will down size down the road.

The TRD Pro is set to undercut the Ranger Raptor, it won't be 59K. I'm thinking 54K. Also, we still don't have a clear answer if the Trail Hunter is a higher grade over the Pro. Going by Toyota's official website. The Pro is listed as the highest grade.

You are not going to get it from the factory.

Even back in the '70s and 80's when you could customer order almost every option on any vehicle separately, and "build your own", you could not order custom paint jobs or mix and match anything/components you wanted especially engines and transmissions. Those days are gone. If you want a Trailhunter you are going to have order one full-boat with the entire package and then take off or buy the parts separately from a dealer and add them yourself: You just dented the value of your minty new vehicle: dramatically. Toyota is not going to build or sell you a one-off, "custom option-delete" and then reduce the price as required. Why would they? Manufacturers had some very rare custom builds now and then including paint and drive-line upgrades, but it took senior top-management connections to do it and very deep pockets to attain them.

My last suv, xterra, was 21k brand new in 2006. When i bought the taco in 2021, it was my first vehicle since the X. I still had it when i bought the truck. I was like a wierd old man being shocked at the prices. I ended up paying 37, or 38k for the truck, almost double my Xterra.

Guess in 15 years when i need a new truck, i wont be able to afford one. It will be 80k for a quad turbo 1 cylinder/ pedal power hybrid truck, one seat, no bed, the rest are alacart options.

Not exactly a cost question directly but related.
Now that it is more than clear that Toyota is trying to steer people towards the top trims will dealerships still try to play the rarity game and up prices.
Clearly Toyota wants to sell more Pro/Trailhunter. So shouldn’t dealerships be allocated many more than before? Or at least let anyone who wants one put in an order for stock vehicles?

Those prices *should* be about 10k+ cheaper.

Unless you absolutely wanna be a NKOTB with a 24 Tacoma… I’d wait. Too many Covid parts linger the assembly line. 2025 and or 2026 may be my year. Although I’m considering waiting until the next 4Runner is announced to pull a trigger.

I still won’t buy the first year of the 4Runner.

And for the record, I’m sure Toyota is going to get a lot of feedback on the 2024 Taco. Like the ridiculous passenger dash letters. Or the required weird seats in the Pro. 2024 has marketing written all over it. Maybe the Taco will be worthy by 2026.

Hopefully the 4Runner will be a home run at release. And hopefully still made in Japan.
