Oil filter cap wrench for 6 cyl

So I'm changing my oil on my 21 for the first time today as it's outside the 2 year maintenance window. Much like you, my cap is on to the point where I have stripped the plastic (using a harbor freight cap socket) and broken of some of the tabs trying channel locks. I have ordered the motivx but I'm not holding my breath and also ordered the metal filter cap. Screw that POS plastic.

And much like you, I could swear that nothing on the skid plate or filter housing has seen the touch of a human hand. My oil came out black as tar too. I have just over 20k miles. I'm not a happy camper today.

 

Use an 18" breaker when you get the Motivx filter wrench. The problem is not the plastic canister but probably not torqued to 18 foot pounds. Put oil on the threads and new o-rings before install.

 

Black as tar? What are you using for oil? I changed my v6's oil last fall just before winter with mobil1, it had about 9200 miles on it, from using the same oil the dealer had last changed it with under toyota care. It didn't look much worse than my tundras oil after a year. I wouldn't be afraid to let it go longer as it wasn't really that bad looking.

 

Sounds like the dealer screwed you and never did an oil change.

Absolutely. Easiest oil change I ever did was with their kit. I mean, its not required, but it is very handy. And you buy the tools once, and it is still less than one change at the dealership.

 

Proper torque puts you right around the single bump after the 3 on the cannister. Where is yours at out of curiosity? Never been to the dealer for a change so I can't say where theirs end up. I use a cheap AdvanceAuto wrench with the notches; never had a problem since it's tightened correctly each time.

Last 4 changes on mine were dark but not black but then again I'm an early bird on changes.

 

When I called motivx a couple years ago inquiring the difference in the new updated wrench over the older ones, they told me they sell these to many dealers, that the old original tool that grips the housings ears were cracking the housings causing leaks. Their new tool which is what everyone is using now fits much tighter to.

 

Yeah, I just bought the kit and i think it actually has a very good tight grip on the housing. Also being installed with o-rings, it doesn't need to be torqued as much as the filters with gaskets.

 

That style is a gamble, even if it “it’s tightened correctly”
