I ran into the same issues, especially being a short-bed truck. Have a solution for you since you have crossbars now… I mounted YAKIMA ski/snowboard racks to my bars. The soft rubber in the middle holds the rods perfectly! You can pick a used set up on CL or eBay for under $100. Highly recommended for any fisherman!IMG_4333.jpg

I am thinking of using rubber v mounts with the tension strap. I hate having my Sage X 8wt swinging around while I am moving. Im thinking of mounting two rubber V's and putting the reel end up against the cab and hanging 3 feet out of the rear of the bed. Does that make sense?

Could always have a pvc tube or something similar on there for the rod.

    Morning MD!

Last night I watched some videos on RTT and may have shattered all my plans. Thinking of alternatives now. I like to do photography and never thought that I would be stuck without the truck in the mornings for sunrise with a RTT, especially if my family was with me...which is the goal. So thinking of a nice ground tent or a trailer. Anyone have input or experience?

When you say RTT are you talking about roof top tents? How would that impact your photography abilities? Just trying to understand so I can try to help offer suggestions.

I’m thinking you mean you couldn’t drive the truck because the family would be sleeping in the tent still?

    +1.

If the issue surrounds mobility whilst the family sleeps, maybe a lightweight ebike to explore as the sun is getting ready to rise?

I was literally going to suggest the same thing. I’ve seen a lot of the outdoorsy-cool-guys on YouTube use those e bikes and one wheels to get around while they leave their rigs at the campsite.

Talon Sei is probably the best example I can think of, Ive watched hundreds of hours of his content and I’m not ashamed lol

I'm shopping utility Ebikes not just as a run-around while camped somewhere, but as a "holy heck my truck is broken, and i don't want to walk 50 miles" solution for self-rescue.

Yeah that’s really smart. During my trip last week I was counting the miles out on the trail so I knew I could walk back and get help if something broke that I couldn’t fix because there were a lot of spots with no cell service.

Fortunately it didn’t come to that.

My years working in emergency management and a general hope for the coming zombie-apocalypse has me always trying to mitigate problems when SHTF. Or a CV axle snaps. Or....

My fav utility ebike is the Lectric. Though it's like $2500 if I recall...and maybe I want to spend 2500 on a rear locker and re-gear instead? Though neither of those things would effect self-rescue. Still considering options as It must be light enough for my 4'10" gf to be able to move off the truck and yet strong enough to carry us both out if needed.

Yeah there are so many different factors to consider and options. The amount of stuff I want to do to the truck before my next big trip is causing me anxiety lol

I wonder if we could build a droppable RTT. Something like a stretcher sits inside the bed with the RTT bolted to it. We'd slide out the tent, feet pop down and it's now set up on legs at bed-height for easy re-insertion into the bed when you're ready to leave.

If you’re going to make a habit of trips like that, look into a Garmin SATCOM. Inreach or similar. Not cheap, but can’t place a price on peace of mind.

As for the e-bike, I feel like you’re better off with a ground tent or trailer that is detachable. Put that money into making your truck more reliable, plus a SATCOM device and even ham radio or something.
