Stopping on hills, hitting gas and truck doesnt move

I was driving on steep paved roads in my 2020 trd offroad. I stopped on a hill, released the brake and hit the gas. It felt like the ABS engaged and the truck didnt accellerate. What is this and is this by design? When I keep my foot on the brake and press the gas the issues doesnt present itself.

Long press on TC button, about 5 secs and it turns off TC completely. I noticed TC in 3rd gen is pretty aggressive.

 

Every car will do that if its rolling back or about to when the torque converter is not mechanically engaged

 

hmm my 2nd gen absolutely didnt do that.

Also yes it seemed traction control engaged when this was happening and the light on the dash went on.

 

You lost traction and Traction Control kicked in, the ABS pump pulsed the rear brake to the spinning wheel to reduce the spin and engaged torque derated to limit power to wheels. Less throttle, or deactivate Traction Control and more throttle for more spin

 

The thing is I didnt loose traction. That is what is so weird. I went on to try it in a few spots and the same thing happened. I have driven my 2nd gen the same way on the same hills(very steep AC paved road) without issues.

 

It’s hill start assist (auto only probably). Not outlined anywhere really but that’s what it is. Go park on a steep hill and then roll back. It’ll do it again.

 

So the only options are 1. Turn off TC when on these hills or offroad, and 2. stay on the brake and hit the gas at the same time letting off the brake?

I wonder if it does it when you trigger ect mode.

It literally does not move forward at all? That seems awfully weird.

And yes traction control will not do anything until a wheel slips. It’s a reactive system. Hill assist will though.

Note that besides activating the ABS brakes, TRAC will cut the throttle to prevent increased wheel spin.

Also note that TRAC will activate a light on your dash

 

Drive up to top of extremely steep hill and slow to a stop at the stop sign. No brake. Hit the gas to go and all the TC(i believe) engages and the truck does not move at all.

I believe also If I stop on said hill mid hill, using the brake, then transition to the gas pedal, same issue.

I have never experienced anything like you are describing. I do not have hill assist however because I have 6mt.

 

Just because you don't think you lost traction, doesn't mean you didn't. You're description is how the traction control system functions...

Hill start only holds pressure in the hydraulic system until you move the throttle, then releases the pressure. And that's only if your truck is equipped with it.
Here are pages 268 to 270 from the manual. The top of 268 & bottom of 270 describes hill start operation. The rest is traction control VSC and TRAC.

 

I have the exact same problem in my 2022 off-road. Definitely was not losing traction at all. Happens in the same spot every day steep hill stop sign.

I assumed from the comments further up that completely disabling trac control turns that off too? To be honest I’ve never had it engage. Brake til acceleration on hills;old habit from my 1st gen.
I’m still learning to let my truck do the thinking I guess

 

“Off roading vehicle” shits itself on a minor hill. Does the oil pressure light also come on with the hill incline/decline?

 

I will just use two feet (only from a stop, NOT when driving) on very steep hills and/or when using a trailer or heavy load, but have been doing this since the beginning of time. Those of us that grew up with manuals had to learn how to not roll back using timing and/or 2 feet on three pedals. Never a problem.
I will admit, the first time the rollback assist kicked in, I thought the transmission pooped the bed. I was deliberately letting the truck roll back when it was brand new, to get an idea of how much the angle of my driveway would affect this,,, especially when backing a trailer down the narrow sucker!
