Toyota put nail in coffin of access cab

Real truck buyers don't use them to haul people. Secure storage in the access cab is perfect. If I were to consider buying a double cab, I would also be considering a 4Runner since it makes more sense to remove the back seats and use it like a pickup with a permanent cap. I probably would just end up with the Xtra cab though.

 

I got my DC mostly to accommodate the Muchkin Mafia (3 Pekingese and a Lhasa Apso), but I owned a '90 SR5 XtraCab for years. Always loved having the extra inside storage that was lockable, and mostly out of sight, thanks to the security glass, but I'd have killed for access doors for loading and unloading on it. Low sales, or not, it just seems like a big step backwards for Toyota, to me.

 

The perfect machine, right there.

 

Future generations will never know the joy of wheeling off road in an access cab and hearing that sweet sweet door assembly symphony rattling and squeaking it's way through your soul.

Think it has to be thought of on the 4th gen as a regular cab+ setup not an access cab.

Gonna keep my Access cab-utility package. I use it as an actual truck not a 4 door sedan DCSB with a teeny open trunk. haha

 

Kinda like those dumb Santa Cruz midget "trucks" with the 18inch long bed

 

I gotta be real. if I had real need for a 6 foot hauler, I'd get one that has 2000 pounds payload cap. Of course the access cab doesnt sell, when the Maverick and Supercab are going to haul more, have a better price, and will be easier found at the fleet dealers.


Tacoma is what it is. It isn't a "real truck." Its a suburban roundabout that handles my camping gear, wet dogs, and the occasional lawnmower repair. It gets bought by people who do that and still want to say that they took it off-road once, here's the instagram picture to prove it. It was designed for polo-wearing twits like me. It has that market cornered, and it still does what it was REALLY designed for, exceedingly well.

 

If I had to get a new 2024 Taco I would have to get the four door. I can't stand having to reach around seats to put groceries in the back. I am too short for that nonsense. Hell my access cab only has 5 thousand miles on it and it's a 22. looks like I am keeping that one till the wheels fall off and the way my wife and I put mileage in it... It should last forever. I love that truck!

 

Exactly. They are light utility vehicles not haulers. Never meant to be an F150 replacement

 

Well, I consider navigating the poor infrastructure of New York City and its surrounds going off-road. I also need something to get me to the hills to chase pow in the winter... I may use my truck to haul wood off my property in the Catskills. It serves my needs well, and that's what matters. Not having to commute daily, it suits me just fine. I couldn't be happier. I don't own another vehicle, nor have plans to do so. However, if a nice '69-'72 Cutlass comes around at a reasonable price, (I don't want the 400 / 455; a 350 will do) I won't' say no...

 

I totally agree. As the road infrastructure continues to crumble deeper into 3rd world-esque disorder, having beefy front suspension and big wheels like on light trucks is slowly becoming a necessity.

 

Nobody else makes one in midsize anymore. You cant even get a 6' bed on the colorado or ranger. Nissan may still make one with doors, but I'll bet its life is short lived

 

Well the 2.7L 4 Cylinder is dead too.......

 

Toyota is going to keep this truck around for 8 to 10 years. Not only do they have meet current crash tests, but also future crash tests. Lean engineers have already said they did it to strengthen the rigidity of the cab. So yes, crash tests are a big reason for it.

 

There goes the last of the bulletproof Toyota engines....end of an era.

Toyota moving away from reliability and into the gadgets n gizmos and 50k + price tags like the North American truck makers we love to hate around here.

Well I have never sold any of my past Toyotas with less than 300K so I'll guess this in my last one while I can still drive. First up grade to my "new 2011" was to remove the console and make a platform. I think it's criminal to put any person back there. Dog thinks it's fine she takes up the entice back area (122 lb female Great Dane).

 

Well that sucks. I will keep this truck forever then.
Memories swapping in. The Nissan was a 1984 King Cab. Folding seats but no access doors. I thought the doors were brilliant.
