Turbo/Hybrid good for longevity and reliability?

Way too much FUD and cope in this thread.
    • If you can’t afford a turbo rebuild after 200,000 miles, you should not be buying a brand new truck.
    • The gas savings of the new 4th gen setup will be $6,000-$10,000 over the 3rd gen in 200,000 miles, not adjusted for inflation over that period.
    • During that time, the truck will be making ~50% more power.
    • If you think forced induction wears out engines that were designed for forced induction, your Scotty Kilmer-itis is showing.
    • If you think Toyota hybrids are unreliable, you are wrong.

The 4th gen hybrid might be two mpg better than the regular 2.4 non-hybrid. It's the same approach they used with the Tundra. I laugh when people think the 4th Taco hybrid will get 30 mpg.

The hybrid Highlander averages 34 mpg and the regular Highlander averages 24. That’s just one point of comparison.

Even if the new hybrid Tacoma is 4 mpg better, less half the hybrid Highlander-Highlander delta, it’s still a substantial increase. Going from, say, 21 mpg to 25 mpg is a 20% increase. That means 20% more range, 20% less expense. Yes, only 4 MPGs but a comparatively large benefit in the real world.

    $10,000 in 200,000 miles ? No way.
    At 200K at 22 mpg @ $3.50/gal it would be $32K
    At 200K at 26 mpg @ $3.50/gal it would be $27K

    Difference of 5K
IF the released figure is 26. And people don't like getting into the power.

No way you'll save 10K, mileage would have to be 30 mpg. Ain't happening.
    Won't get into electrics.

200K average longevity on this turbo ? Will have to see it to believe it.
    Ecoboosts won't even get that.
Also if you can stand looking at an imax screen and an air dam for a 737 for 200K too.

If it gets 24-26 average real world, I'll be happy. Not expecting 30 at all.

    20mpg vs 24mpg

At $3.00/gal over 150K mi is a saving of $3750.

There is a good reason for that large hideous air dam.

Yeah I will sacrifice one mpg to remove that atrocity. Granted, I see all manufacturers adding those on.

Thanks. I'm sure it'll be back up to over $5 in the next few years. I actually just paid 4.50 at arco so I'm sure other pumps are seeing 5 right now.

How will the new Tacoma resale value be with 150k when people know they may need to replace turbo and hybrid batteries in the near future. That will be interesting. No worries. Unicorns and rainbows.

Dealerships are loving these new trucks with turbos, electric motors, batteries, imax theatres. A service gold mine for them.
Gone are the days of keeping these vehicles 20 years, maybe even 15, not cost effective by any means.
If anyone buys these trucks without an extended warranty they need their head examined, unless they are selling before warranty is up.

Yes, it's all a huge conspiracy Toyota will wait out 20 years down the road.

Will the turbo outlive the engine it is attached to?
Will the hybrid batteries outlive the engine?
Two things we have never had to worry about with previous gens.
Nothing to see here. Move along.

Has nothing to do with a conspiracy, it's automakers and dealers know how to make big bucks.

Nobody here expects those to outlive a n/a engine. I don't. I'm a grownup and know what I'd be getting into.

Well for a grownup you sure seem to miss the point a lot. As if you don’t want to know certain things. The two things new to the Tacoma I mentioned will be a huge cost for those who like to keep their Tacomas for an extended amount of time. No big deal. Right?

Seems you're worried too much about how others spend their money. And if I buy something I know what I'm buying. By telling people here that you know better than them is quite pretentious.

I gave a range for a reason. Compare 20 mpg avg with 26-30 mpg avg. I think that’s closer to 3rd gen vs 4th.

Also, oil commodity prices are going to go up. Gas will be over $4/gal for the majority of that $200k. (I work in oil & gas).
