I suppose this is a pretty dumb one but my truck won’t turn over and has the “check engine charging system” message pop up. All signs would point to a dead battery. However, the last time my battery died, the truck would at least try to turn over the engine (it would make the noise and you could audibly tell it was trying). This time it will not even attempt to turn the engine. Is the battery just that dead where it has enough juice to turn on the dash, but doesn’t have enough volts (or amps?) to try and turn over? Thanks in advance for the silly question.

    Edit: I’m in a ‘17 OR

Get the battery tested. If there’s not enough power, it’s common it won’t even attempt to crank. However if your battery is over 3 years old, it wouldn’t hurt to replace it anyways. I see you’re in a 2017, if it’s the original battery,,, you’re beyond lucky.
How’d you kill the battery before? This isn’t good for batteries.

I just got a new battery for my 17, just as a safety precaution. So if it hasn't been changed more than likely that's your problem.

Pull the battery. Take to parts house for testing. When they administer last rites, take to to Costco and trade it in on a new one.

I would say 5 years is the max on a battery

when you go to costco bring the tools to remove the old battery in the parking lot, put in a shopping cart and buy/exchange and install the new one.
first go in and make sure they have the correct battery in stock!

Agreed, I just replaced my stock one after 3 years with one from costco in the same manner. I like not having batteries take a shit in the woods. $120 is well worth that hassle and piece of mind.

When I killed the battery before it was in my old Tacoma, same exact year and model though. My plan is to replace regardless, for sure!

Holy smokes, if you got 6 years that’s amazing, unless you bought it used, it was most likely replaced.

I did get 6 years from my previous OEM battery. This truck was bought used so I’m not entirely sure how long it’s been in there. At least a year and a half.

    wow
I'd skip the test and get a new battery,,, it needs replaced either way.
With these newer vehicles, I'd make a habit out of replacing before failure.

Has anything changed recently with your truck? Modifications / upgrades?
    • No: as others have suggested, have the battery tested
    • Yes: if the modifications have an electrical component (a switch, a winch, etc. - anything that needs electricity) remove whatever you modded, charge your battery, then see if your Taco starts. You may have introduced something that has a lot of parasitic draw and is discharging your battery.
