Everyone needs their truck to do different things but coming from someone who currently owns a regular cab I’m pretty interested in the extra cab. In my opinion if you can’t load or unload your gear by tilt/sliding the seat forward a bit it has no business being in the cab that’s what the bed is for. Anyway, once the extra cabs start landing at my local dealers I’ll definitely be checking them out.

The 2021 (2016-2022) Dual Cab Tacoma received a Marginal rating for the updated SIDE impact test.
Crash testing was not the reason for deleting the Access Cab model as I suspected. Post # 95 has an official source documenting the rationale for why Toyota discontinued the Access Cab.The crash test myth oft repeated here is hereby dismissed.

In my neck of the woods a Tacoma isnt a real truck. Real trucks start with a payload of at least 3500# LOL

Finally, an official source for why the Access Cab was discontinued, thank you!
Puts the crash test myth spread on TW to bed.

The article states “a staggering 50% of smaller cab customers specified a rear seat delete on the last Tacoma.”
That appears to mean that 50% of Access Cab customers chose the Utility Package, which is what I chose. This makes sense for a lot of business/trades customers and individuals like myself who like the longer bed and large storage behind the seats.
What I think Toyota missed here is not everyone wants cubby storage and no doors. The Access cab with doors allows long items to be easily placed in back, and large bulk items. The new Xtra cab has a drivers side seat slide to allow access to “tools”- what about large equipment and bulky items, and what about things on the passenger side?
The new Xtra cab also appears to have less space than the current Access Cab Utility package. I don’t see this as an improvement at all. But I’m biased of course.

As someone who went from an access cab to a DCLB, I can honestly say I miss my access cab (I like a 6ft bed without the longer wheelbase) and not having those doors would be a deal breaker for me. I could not care less about the rear seat, as I removed mine, but not having doors to access the back section is a no-go for me. Between my dog, gear, and cleaning out the back I utilized those doors quite a bit.

I love my rear mini doors. Pretty useful in a tight spot also.

What he said. But add ‘dogs’ to the list!

Glad I got my Access cab last year, and based on my mileage and care, I should have it 20 years or more.

"Only 3% of 2022 Tacoma drivers utilize their rear seats daily. The majority (39%) have people in the back less than once a month, while 30% admitted never using the second row."

Based on this info, it's baffling why they only offer the Xtracab in the lower trim, less optioned packages. They go on to say they are doing the Xtracab as a favor to tradespeople and commercial business that wants the utility aspect and cargo space (with 6-ft bed, as well). But this completely ignores the recreational users which last time I checked, has grown to a larger proportion then ever before. It doesn't make sense. For someone who uses their truck on technical 4wd trails, wheelbase matters. For someone who prefers cargo space optimization, camper square footage, and load rating, the cab length and weight matters. It is strange they don't offer these users the trucks with the higher grade drivetrains and suspensions and features.

The suicide doors are a really cool feature and makes getting my pup in and out very easy. Getting a DCSB defeats the whole reason I own a truck and a DCLB is just too friggin' big.

Guess this 2021 is gonna have to last me longer than anticipated.

Not entirely true. The Access Cab has overall worse ratings than the double cab.

Structure and Safety Cage for the access cab are rated as acceptable while the double cab are rated as good. From what I can see, the double cab was tested and given a good rating for side crash test, but marginal for the updated test. The Access Cab was not given the updated test.

The small front overlap passenger side test was also worse in the access cab than the double cab. Foot intrusion was rated worse on the double cab for this test, but head and neck were worse for the access cab.

I won’t argue some of the points you make, I’ve read all the tests, however everything I said in my post you quoted was 100% true. I cited the updated side impact test for the Dual Cab Tacoma.
Additionally post #95 provides an official source for the reason the Access Cab model was discontinued - talk about crash testing all you want but that’s not the reason.

I saw that post and do agree with it. However, I do think the crash test played a factor as well. Maybe a minor one, but one nonetheless. While the post does cite the main reason the seats were eliminated, it fails to address why there are no opening/closing rear doors and, instead, the design relies on seats that move out of the way. I believe that has more to do with crash safety.

Me too. our access cab 2009 is our family vehicle. Surprised they didn't at least offer seat belts and jump seats in the back, even without access cab. Rather have seats and use them rarely vs. need seats and not have them.
