I bought a great 2000 Prerunner recently and everything works great except the cruise control about half the time. When I press “on” the dash light comes on but the cruise will not engage when I press set. This happens about half the time. I keep trying both but no luck. But if I turn ignition off and back on it likely will work. Then I can brake to turn off resume again and again. Then if ignition is turned off it may not work. Seems to me the switch is ok but something else in the electrical is causing the issue. Any suggestions or experience like this? Thanks ahead for any help!

    Welcome to the forum!

Intermittent open circuit or one of the safety switches is causing the open circuit .

You need tofind the Electrical Wiring Diagrams for the2000 Tacoma to do the trouble shooting. I hope this helps.

Going by memory, here, but doesn't the clock spring feed to the CC? Might be a bad clock spring.

Do you have an airbag light on?

I’ve finally figured out the cruise works about half the time and when it’s not I can turn it on and off and still won’t set even though the “cruise” light on dash is on. But if I turn ignition completely off and then back on it may work fine as many times as I turn it on or off. Then if I turn ignition off it may not work. This has happened over and over so I’m sure the cruise is functioning properly but something in the wiring between the ignition switch and the cruise circuit is faulty. Would appreciate any suggestions or thoughts

I now think I have the cause of intermittent cruise problems. It is working fine. The problem is with the automatic shift lever positioning. When I go from park or reverse sometimes I am partway between D & 2. Most of the time it still runs in drive but the cruise won’t work until I push it forward slightly into drive. Looked at linkage underneath and see where there’s an adjustment but haven’t taken time to figure out. Anyone adjusted their linkage before and have some insight? Thanks ahead for any replies.
