In the exact same places YOU went. See, you went from making it sound like it being a fact that a SR could do everything a TRD could do, to my SR did everything a TRD could do where “I” went.

That could be a mall parking lot for all we know.

A 1-3 inches is a good range for most off road vehicles and it absolutely helps. Changes the angles. I mean, there’s a lot of other factors to consider but while you think it’s laughable, there are people that use that laughable locker.

For example, but whoever this guy is, is probably a member on here.

I respect the guys that take their stock trucks to hard trails, I did that for years on all my rigs. But shocks are easily once of the most noticeable changes you can make to these trucks. It’s a great platform already so just upgrading the shocks goes a long way. The stock shocks fade way too much under any real off-roading. Just because you can make if there with open diffs, no amor and stock shocks doesn’t mean you can do so reliably or safely. Something as simple as transmission skid can save you big $$$$$ when you inevitably fudge up.

Don’t go to the mall, hate shopping. :)

My old truck has a locker, barely used it. Been through a lot harder places than what you showed in that video.

SR can definitely go where you can take a TRD. It is all the same truck. 1-3” lift isn’t really much. Some guys will try and tell you it is night and day, it isn’t. Once you have been in professional race trucks and crawlers. OR and Pros are pointless, and complete waste of money. Some people love ‘em though.

Unless it is a full on race truck, wouldn’t even bother. Sure it might get you there a little faster than a stock truck…but no where near being able to rip through gnarly sections like they aren’t even there. Once you had a taste of Class 1450 and Trophy Truck, everything else pales in comparison. Save your money up for something that truly is capable, than wasting it trying to make a Tacoma what it’s not. If you’re going to do it right, torch off the frame at the firewall and back of the cab, cage it, and put some real suspension on it. Otherwise you’re just pissing into the wind.

It’s an example. Chill. There’s harder trails around the western US. https://youtu.be/ar5AAwND1nU

    Again, says you.
a race truck with a suspension that was custom made. That kind of makes the argument that
    1) better suspension matters and
    2) that it cost money.

a “professional” crawler is called a salvaged Jeep that isn’t road legal and needs to be trailered to the trail head.

You act like some of use haven’t been on rated trails before. There’s a whole section here on TW.

..but a suspension, lift and lockers is not equal to the not having it.

If I had $300,000 to build a trophy truck I wouldn’t be driving a Tacoma. If I want to hit massive whoops and launch off 120ft doubles I’ll just load my yz450f into the taco, same level of excitement, fraction of the cost.

Well yeah, I do bikes too…maybe that is just it, truck can’t even dream where a bike can go. used to be into the modding thing, just fell out of favor since it became rather pointless, no matter how much money you toss at a Tacoma, can’t touch what you can do with a bike. And just have to laugh when people are arguing over bullshit shock semantics, and even the best ones are fairly limited because what they are bolted to.

My buddy’s crawler, if you’re gonna go play in the rocks at least do it right. Built it himself, nowhere near $300K, mostly junkyard parts. Sorry just don’t see why all the chest thumping over a mid travel truck. Find Pros pointless. ORs aren’t terrible for the money, good for getting to some out of the way camping spots but still pretty limited on what they can do.

He is building up a F100 prerunner too.

See, like i said a Jeep.
Probably a salvage. I have one too.

It’s not chest thumping. It’s a matter of a true statement. I don’t personally care one way or another if YOU or other members here like or dislike certain tacomas. Hence why I’ve kept it vague and to the point of features.

I love a good purpose built rig, be it a rock crawler or Baja racer. The Tacoma won’t ever match those capabilities but it can be swiss army knife. A mildly lifted taco can be a DD, long distance road tripper, camping platform, toy hauler and you can still have fun off road. Oh and it will last a decade plus and you will be able to put 300,000 miles on it if you maintain it. If a locker, better shocks and skids makes your time in the truck more enjoyable than it’s worth it in my book. There have been plenty of spots my SR5 struggled to go before my mild lift and arb lockers. Even my high clearance bumper let me go more places.

Just kinda over all that stuff, been there and done it for decades, you name it I probably have broken it, now just need a tow pig to the trailhead…to unload the real off-road toys. Dunno once the single track bug bites, it bites hard. Bouncing around in a Tacoma hasn’t gotten really old. As they say to each their own!

Sorry. Just sounded like the same old story of people trying to sell the hype of Pros and ORs. Have done that stuff for decades, most of the add-ons aren’t needed, but people will try and justify it. To the point in life, leave the truck at camp and hit the trails with a purpose built machine.

    A few.
Thats what the Tundra Pro stickers for and it went up $10k over the previous Tundra. Tacoma isnt going to be the same price as a Tundra. Upper $50s most likely without any added accessories.

The Tundra is bigger and has a larger engine, but the Tacoma TRD Pro has more stuff than the Tundra TRD Pro.

I think that’ll close the price gap a little more compared to the previous gens. Wonder when they’ll release pricing and MPG info

This doesn't quite work in my region. There's usually no basecamp. You spend a whole day going through difficult trails one-way to camp in a different spot each night.

The ideal vehicle for my needs would be street-legal overlanding rock buggy that can wade through chest-deep water. No company builds one yet. Jeeps can be modified to come close to that combination of attributes once the 40"s and exo-cage go on, but Jeeps aren't reliable.

Come to think of it, the Xtra Cab does make building an exo-cage easier, with no rear door to work around

The chief Taco engineer (that guy is growing on me, my the way, I like him better than Sweers) made a bit of a telling comment in one of the YouTube videos. He said that the market is demanding full size luxury in a truck that will fit in the garage. This makes me think that the Pro and TH may very well flirt with $70k.

You could do the point to point camp thing here, but no need to. There is so much in one place, like to base camp, and dissect the area. Can spend 3-4 days and not ride the same trail twice. Then we go somewhere else next.

Sounds like you need a UTV, can make them street legal here. Just can’t take them on the interstate. Which I avoid like the plague. Bone stock UTV will out wheel a heavily modded Tacoma no problem.

You can put an exo-cage on a AC, just don’t use the rear doors. Should give people the option. :p Probably get a F350 for the next truck to get that, need a better tow pig anyways.

Yeah but the true test is how does it handle the speed bumps at the mall.
