LSS: A strange object came out of the draining oil at last oil change, 2.5 months ago. Could not determine what it is or where it possibly came from. It became a conversation piece on my coffee table.

Two weeks ago, I started noticing quarter-sized oil drops on ground in several places, all laterally near each other, towards the front. I left for a week vacation, returned 5 days ago and now the leak has turned into the next Exxon Valdez. I was adding at least a quart, quart+half every day just to essentially get around.

I’m wondering if this mysterious MOOP has something to do with the oil leak. Pics: DB3E9842-4401-43F8-BA85-414E6C2B2B8C.jpg C94A693F-DB28-4D06-8F73-91E606DCFB5E.jpg

It’s similar to a whetting stone in composition. It’s not magnetic. It’s smoother in texture IRL than in the pics.
    Thoughts and ideas greatly appreciated!

Nothing I know of and I doubt that came out of the oil drain hole.

You need to find out exactly where your oil is leaking from before you run out of oil and you lose your engine.

I promise it came out of the oil pan, it was stuck trying to come out with the draining oil. It was easily dislodged with a quick tug. And yes trying to determine source(s) of leak. Just degreased it to get a better look. It’s definitely NOT oil filter or plug, all belts are solid and intact, just replaced the valve covers AND gaskets AND timing belt 2 months ago.

Looks like an abrasive pad for a cylinder hone.

What is the history on this truck?
How long have you owned it and how many oil changes have you done to it?

Looks like a honing stone after searching for images.

I'm interested as to the purpose of honing stones now. What does these accomplish? Similiar to fine grit sandpaper on the cylinder wall?

That's what it looks like to me, as well. How something like that would find its way into the oil pan though, I have no idea.

OP, have you ever had your engine rebuilt by chance?

Remains to be seen I bought the tires and wheels the rest came along
How could you remove the piston and not the oil pan?

Nothing to hone in the head even if it could fit through the oil drain holes.

That would be the simple answer .

Then to do that the piston is all ready out.

You can’t and I’m not suggesting the cylinders were honed just that the size and texture of that thing looks like an abrasive pad from a hone. Who knows what it really is and how it found its way into the oil pan.

OP, any progress with your oil leak?

This is why you don’t get your oil changed at Wally’s

Is it soft like a sponge? I can't see how that came out of the drain plug hole. Isn't the drain plug 14mm? What is the end dimensions?

Truck is 21 years old. Maybe at some point the oil pan was dropped for some service reason. The object made its way into the pan, and was unnoticed when the pan was reinstalled?
