I'd like to drive/ride in a tuned 3.5. I drove a stock 3rd gen and it was laughable compared to my supercharged 4.0.

A tune will wake up the 3.5 but you needed a power adder to wake up the 4.0? o_O

I drive both. I don't find the 3rd gen to lack power. It could use more low end torque and it surely is no powerhouse but its sufficient for the truck. My 2nd gen does feel livelier and peppier overall. The 4.0 seems like it doesn't need to work as hard to get the truck going. I think the 3rd gen trans is fine. It does hunt a bit on the highway. My 2nd gen does it as well, just not as much. Could be the bigger tires though. The 2nd gen trans has its oddities too. Shifts great but it always seems to shift to the next gear a bit early in most situations. At 40 the truck wants to be in the highest gear already. Makes the truck shift a lot around these speeds. I know a simple tune can fix it but around town I drive in 4th. Makes it much better.

If I had to pick either one to go 300k and expect minimal repairs. I would go 2nd gen.

I love my 3rd gen Tacoma, it's everything I wanted without a ton of shit I didn't. And it's fun as hell to drive!

I’ve had seat time w 4.0 & 3.5. Both good motors but different in how they go about their business. For me it’s like your kids; you can’t pick a favorite…or at least I’ll never admit publicly which I like better.

It's fun to drive, nice and zippy as long as you keep the rpm's up a little. If Toyota would have used slightly different gear spacing, made 5th gear 1 to 1, and had only 6th as overdrive, there probably not be near the complaints about performance. I bet the new 8 speed will be nice for sure. I really enjoy driving mine.

King 2.5’s with adjusters from accutune front and rear, 88 rotors rear add a leaf, Camburg X-joint UCA’s, Factory style trd pro 16” wheels with 0 offset, 285/75/16 KO2’s, pro grille, Front bumper viper cut, trd front skid plate, full RCI under skid plates, Cali raised trail sliders, exhaust cut dump, KDMax 10.0 tune
It’s a night and day difference. A massive improvement for sure. I believe the tune unlocks an additional 29 HP and 28 lb ft of torque. It’s the KDMax Pro 9.0

    Let me stop this thread...
There is nothing, nothing, this engine won't do within reason.
    It won't pull 15K lbs.
    It won't run 2.9 sec 0-60
Everything else within reason? It does fine.

    There's no replacement for displacement.

4.0 feels right. 3.5 lacks low end torque. I personally would rather have low end torque in a truck.

The 4th gen Tacoma will have max torque at under 2k rpm. It will be glorious.
