Hello I just joined this forum because I feel like it must be a good one. I am having some trouble with my 2001 Toyota Tacoma. I just recently redid the valve, cover gaskets and manifold gaskets and when I put everything back together it was running too rich and won’t run the way it used to purr. So then to try to fix the problem I did a tuneup with new coils, new spark, plugs and wires and it’s still running way too rich and also running too much like shit to drive. I have a family mechanic that says he thinks changing the spark plugs will help and using fuel injector cleaner, but it Hass to be something a little bit more complicated than that. Any input is very much appreciated!!

Which manifold gaskets did you change?

How do you know it's running rich?

Replaced the valve, cover gaskets and the manifold gaskets. Upper and lower manifold gaskets. I know it’s running rich because of the spark plugs I replaced, and then double checked the new ones. It is throwing codes for misfires, which makes no sense since it was purring perfectly before I did all this. It was just leaking oil and I didn’t like it I did replace a cracked vacuum hose already that didn’t make a difference. I need to quadruple check all of them but I have been looking. Someone said they thought maybe I disturbed the fuel injection and that’s why it’s running rich and like shit but I’m not sure what to look for along those lines

And yes, before anybody says anything I have checked the firing order a bunch of times before with the old wiring and also with the new wires and plugs

Are you sure you got the vacuum lines connected correctly? I'm wondering if the EGR valve is being supplied vacuum when it shouldn't be and being held open which would result in a rich condition, I'd unplug the EGR valve first and see if it runs better.

Welcome to the TW. I hope you can solve your problem with the help of other members. Myself I'm not mechanically inclined. Sorry I couldn't help with your problem.

Thanks for that DM93 and yes I will have to try that… I was thinking maybe a new EGR valve but it wouldn’t make sense unless I did make a mistake or switch with the vacuum lines so I will have to go over those more carefully. Thanks again

Since you took apart so many things you can try letting it run and spraying carb cleaner all over everything and listen for idle changes. That may help pinpoint a possible vacuum leak.

You can also bypass the EGR to eliminate it as a possibility, just for troubleshooting purposes.

Lots of good resources here. I’m also not one of them. @whatstcp might have some ideas. Hoping for a return to purrrfect.

PCV hose, that would definitely be a huge vacuum leak.
