In 2010, I asked what oil the dealership used. They said, Kendall.
That doesn’t mean Kendall makes their oil. It’s just what the dealership was using at the time.

Who knows, it could be multiple suppliers. Typically with oil (or any other part or lubricant) the manufacturer will lay out the minimum specifications it needs to meet and whichever companies can make it the cheapest at those specifications gets the contract.

No, a higher viscosity oil will not make your engine work "harder" maybe straight weight oil WAY above the recommended would but by then you would have other issues..blown seals, plugged passages etc...note that it is the "recommended" viscosity of oil and not the MANDATORY viscosity. They recommend that weight based off their engineering specifications, but its not an all or nothing standard. Nothing will happen any different, the engine will not work any harder with 5w-30 than 5w-20...and yes I am a petoleum engineer. well used to be, now Im just an old grumpy person that yells at the squirrels for eating out of my bird feeders...

Ok so I just did my first do it yourself oil change, not so hard I did drop my drain plug in the oil which led me to believe the washer fell too especially since nothing came off as I scratched with my finger but now the jobs done and I think there are 2 washers.
How bad is this? Do I need to run out get new oil and washer and redo? Nothing seems to be leaking.

The internal engine temp in both scenarios would be almost the same...your comment is not even remotely correct.

General internal bearing tolerances have been the same for years and years. A 30 year old 22RE Toyota motor has almost identical bearing tolerance specs to a new Tacoma 3.5 that calls for 0w20/5w20.

Engine speed/RPM is what increases oil temp. Not the actual load on the engine. "Highway" trucks have gobs of low end torque and operate at much lower RPMs in general. A big truck like that typically shouldn't see a spike in oil temps and those truck don't need to down shit much once up to speed due to all the torque they have. This is why they last 500k+ miles without needed a rebuild.

oil threads are where most of the "pulled out of my ass" comments are used.

I’ve done half and half many times

    0w20
    5w30
Half and half in a jug
shake it up, pour it in
    engine mixes it too

that’s kind of how they make oil at the factory.

engine works. Looks brand new inside when I took the valve covers off at high miles. Clean metal. Not varnish yellow stained metal which is what Mobil 1 is known to do.

really whatever I have on the shelf. If I’ve got some good quality 0w40, then that’s what I’m pouring in.

I don’t know much about oil.
But it can’t be as complicated as some make it out to be.

Has the word "oilphile" been coined yet? You heard it first on TW!

Reading the oil threads are similar to reading audiophile threads.

    so many oil threads.
i don't know where to leave this...don't want to start a thread for it...or if it has already been posted. if meaningful it will get around i think.

Mobil 1 rebate program is on for 2023.
even though walmart is not in "terms and conditions" list, the online submission form accepts walmart and mobil 1 cust svc confirmed you
can buy at walmart. I just submitted for $20 rebate. my previous years account was convenient to get right to it.
