Not true as the gas mileage difference won't be that great even at 150K to offset it. Plus you are forgetting the initial cost of the battery motor electronics etc and maintenance of such.
Do you really need it ?
I'd rather go to a Tundra at this point than have a 4 banger with everything jammed down its throat to run it.
These trucks will be a nightmare to maintain as 200K approaches.

I feel like in my childhood the first Prius owners I saw were getting an atomic wedgie on the side of the road. Torn underwear, tears, laughing, ugly..I think it might have damaged me in some way.

That isn’t too-too bad. Costing me $12K to put a new engine in my 1st Gen. Having Toyota do it, yes I could have done it cheaper with a JDM, and a small shop, but that is a crap shoot and wanted a warranty. Heck, I could have done myself even cheaper, but beyond over working on stuff. Buddy of mine is a senior tech, his shop gave me an estimate, only a couple hundred bucks cheaper. Most people complain about the stealership, price wasn’t all that much different.

Battery pack is essentially a fuel tank, some of those extended range tanks are $1500+. So replacing a battery isn’t all too terrible in the big scheme of things.

    I’m in 3rd Gen Tacoma
I think the 4th gen reveal was amazing, Toyota really did great job with, looks, performance, features.
I also really like my 3rd gen, 2021 with low miles, as much as I would like 4th gen is just not time. Plus I really like my 3rd gen also.

hoping ok to like both. Don’t think we have to hate one to like the other

Think we all should be thankful that Toyota actually did some major updates that were waaay long over due. Can’t please everybody, know I am a little miffed to see the AC go, but at the end of the day is it just a vehicle. A DC will work just fine, maybe even a little better, can shove even more crap back there than my AC.

I want to see the 4th Gen DCLB on 35s…

I’m assuming Gen4 better be a big improvement, otherwise Toyota isn’t doing their job. I’ve also owned three Gen3’s & honestly have no desire to lay down cash for a 2024. Full disclosure, I prefer six unstressed cylinders, but 100% respect others’ enthusiasm to buy a Gen4. Go for it, and tell us how it worked out. Maybe in a few years I’ll dive in too. Maybe not.

If you had a bad experience w a Gen3 or maybe one just rolled over your toe a while back, I can’t help you, but work it out b/c your opinion definitely doesn’t mean 1.8 million other truck owners are driving trash trucks.

    IMHO

There is always something of value in new technology ... safety, materials reliability (ask the experts ... even in its heydey the Titanic used substandard steel), ...

But that video with the "grand reveal of trucks scattered throughout the landscape" was also littered with "yes ... all the powertrains are vast improvements over previous, but more on that later". We never saw them driving, never saw the RPMs on the computer-generated gauges at different speeds, on or off mud or less-wet dirt. Really just heard predictions.

The dash with its metal (or metal looking) trim seems reminiscent of the 1950s-1960s sparse dashes. Most of the controls are moved overhead or on the center shift-console with its funny side-grip.

I do not like my 8 inch screen because it distracts me from driving with bright-shiny pictures ... god help me with that TV screen which I am sure *SOMEONE* will find a hack to make it play videos for the driver. The main display is now completely computer-generated. My 3rd Gen may lose its surround-cameras after 10 years, but my physical gauges will outlive the computer-screen stashed between them. Think "LONG TERM EXTENDED WARRANTIES".

I find the obsession with "must have the <fill-in> grill!" ridiculous. Ditch lights function, LED bed lights function, LED headlight function. Appearance for the sake of appearance is just money that could improve function.

But people who value "pretty" over "proven reliable, even if a bit kludgy" will be planning their 4th child with their intended truck/marriage-partner while still laying down the $1500 non-refundable deposit on a vehicle that will delivered no sooner than late November.

The improvements are greatly appreciated, though think gone are the days of a Toyota being a “lifetime truck”…now trade in or sell it before the warranty is up. That is the plan with my 3G, it is gone when it hits 100K miles. Don’t trust it to go the distance like previous Gens.

Out of warranty repairs are going to be a lot more. For an example windshield in my 1G is $150, in my 3G it is $850.

Plus want to get rid of it when it still has some value left. Not getting younger, not interested in squeezing every last penny out of my vehicles anymore.

The 4th gen from tech, design, power; literally the whole kitchen sink trounces everything the 3rd gen has. My biggest complaint with the 3rd gen is the lack of power. Toyota solved this with a class leading 460+ lbs of torque (even beating the Ranger Raptor). The struggle to go up hill in a 3rd gen is pretty laughable for a truck.

Also excuse my bias, I've owned:
    - 2016 Manual Tacoma Sport
    - 2019 AT Tacoma TRD Pro
    - 2022 AT Tacoma TRD Pro

Beat the glorious 2nd gen in the gauntlet tow test.
I'd rather have a Tundra with a 6 at this point rather than a 4 banger with the added expenses of a drill motor and vacuum cleaner to push it.
Not cost effective by any means.

Exactly. You owned one Gen3, then bought two(!) more of the most expensive trims, despite their inability to climb hills. A better endorsement I could not offer.

Seriously though, I’ll reiterate that we can all assume Gen4 offers significant improvements, albeit nobody has even driven it yet, and styling is 100% subjective. In fact, I encourage as many early adopters as possible, to work through the TSB’s before I test drive one after refresh.

My point is that a “better” Gen4 does not mean that Gen3 is “bad”. We see this attitude come out every time there’s a redesign, both ways. I, and a whole lot of others can still love Gen3, yet we can all still be friends w/o telling each other how their truck sucks regardless of personal bias.

It'll be OK Tacoman. The 4th gen being incredible or a disaster won't change anything about your 3rd gen. Nobody going down the road cares about what you're driving. And even if they do...

Assume nothing. The engine tranny combo could suck. There could be a major design flaw. We really won’t know until about the summer of 2025. Not likely, but I bought a 2017 and that was way too early in the 3rd gen cycle. It literally took until 2021 to get the 3rd gen kinks out.

Oh, and the 14” monitor looks stupid.

No where did I state the 3rd Gen is bad. But it has quite a few short comings that is solved by the 4th Gen. it’s an iterative process. It’s fine to feel good about your current purchase. But to deny or disregard obvious improvements is just ignorant.

Additionally, for me. Life is too short to worry about if the truck is going to last 200K miles.

Correct. All I know is that a bunch of paid YouTube influencers in Hawaii (most of whom I wouldn’t even buy a watch from) really really like it. Also seen partial spec sheet, & pics.

How it actually drives, reliability, mpg, build quality, even prices, all pretty important missing pieces. I want to like it, but looking forward to seeing a lot more.

Hope you are correct. Time will tell. Until then I will keep my Gen 3 with @mZiggy YoyaWerx Stryker Tune for the Magnuson Super Charger. Kicks Ass and still less $ than a Gen 4 with all the Mother Ship bells and whistles. No way Gen 4 blows the doors off my SC Gen 3. Tundra Gen 3 rather than Tacoma Gen 4 for me.

    @Lunar Squirrel

Are those "content creators' paid by Toyota?

Or do they simply make money on views?

    I've been wondering about this.

The real question is - Does it come with a clock that's not part of the infotainment system? ;-)

Actually, I don't care. Since the Safety Sense stuff became standard equipment in 2018, I figured I will never buy a newer Toyota. If I ever reach the point where I can't keep my 2017 running, I'll deal with things then. Maybe I'll just buy a classic truck of some kind and revel in my smug neo-luddite awesomeness.

    Complaints?
    - Engine/Transmission - stock, it drives like a turbo four-banger box truck. OVTune 1.05 and I've never thought about the engine/transmission again.
    - Seat height? Stock is too high. I have to look out of the top third of the windshield. The truck was made for halflings.
    - No manual transmission for the DCLB. DAMN YOU TOYOTA!!
    - Infotainment systems, not a fan. Only clock is in the infotainment system, and at night the damned thing is too bright.
    - Can't check the transmission fluid via the dipstick, so I have to trust that the repair shop checked it when I asked them too.
    - Stock tires were crap. Some D rated 255/85R16s fixed that and gave a bit more ground clearance. W00t!

Seriously though, my only real complaint was the engine/transmission, and once I got things tuned, I've not had any real complaint. The rest is bitching just to bitch.
