But it's 3.6 with the PCM plugged in?

The reason I asked was because when removed the clamp from the multimeter lead to put the needle on back on, something felt off with the lead. It’s dark and I wasn’t really looking at it when I changed it, but it didn’t have that familiar feel to it. I did grab my other meter and test with the battery still being the ground and it was the same result. I may try it again tomorrow with a ground inside. I want to 100% rule out me as point of failure.

No, that was with it unplugged. Should I plug it back in and try?

I'm wanting to see what the resistance is on the CAN bus with the PCM plugged in and unplugged, trying to see if it's shorted.

I’m sorry about that. It is the same at 3.6 with it plugged in.

Ah ok so no change with the PCM unplugged?
Are you sure your on the right pins on the OBD port? It's upside down on the Tacoma.

Correct. No change with pcm plugged in.
Looking at the connector in the truck it is the third one from the right for both of them. Pictures don’t come out very well with the iPad and my lighting out there stinks. The other truck took priority today but the parts for it won’t be here until Monday. This means I should have daylight tomorrow and can get some pictures of the things I was testing.

On the truck it sits like this though.
Yes pictures of where your testing would help me make sure your in the right spot.

I’m probably still a moron, but not from this. The connector isn’t mounted, so it was flipped, but I was still testing the right pins. The other 2 slots don’t have anything in them…they are empty. I will def get pics tomorrow. I recall 4 and 6 because when I first tried the scan tool way back when, those pins were loose in the front of the connector.

I need to drop for the night. Thank you for having so much patience. I’ll get some photos to you tomorrow, but know there is absolutely no rush from my end for anything. I’m just ecstatic at there finally being progress, and that I’m getting more familiar with the inner workings of a motor vehicle :)

Hello again and good mid-day. I'm heading out to the truck shortly and my gameplan is to re-do the 5v tests with the ground being at the ECM. Not sure that it will produce anything new, but for whatever reason I want to do this. I'll also re-do the resistance test. In fact, I'll do that one first since the battery is disconnected. I should also be able to get photos of everything. I'll also move some lighting out there now so I can see better in the evening.

I can't say that I would be surprised if the ECM were toast. It's been my experience that lightning doesn't necessarily have to make a direct hit in order inflict damage. Although I usually make it a practice to keep 2 of some things available for troubleshooting purposes, I don't have a spare 2014 Tacoma 4x4 to swap parts with to confirm :) A quick Internet search and I see repair and replace options, and better yet I'm not seeing thousands of $$$ associated with this, which is nice. I also have a local contact who owns a shop specializing in these repairs if need be. It's good to know there are options that won't break the bank..I don't think.

Thank you again for everything you've been helping with.

If you have an automatic truck they are relatively cheap used ($100-300) and they are plug and play which is nice.

Get out - plug and play? As in - it doesn't need to be programmed specific to the vehicle/vin? That would be awesome. I guess we can explore that route when the time comes.

I spent some time bonding with the Tacoma this afternoon. After testing a couple of the 5v again using the inside ground...and getting the same results....with 2 different meters..I'm reasonably certain that those are the final answers. Had the same result with the resistance at the OBD port. Also checked power at OBD port, and it was at battery level which was 12.4. Ground was zero. I have pics of some of it, but have to make my way inside to upload.

So far though - all indicators point to it being the ECM?

The only thing that has to be done is an immobilizer reset but that is 30 min with a jumper wire.
The VIN should be written to the replacement PCM but this isn't necessary to make the truck run.

If powers and grounds check out yes, since you have 1.5-2v on the 5v circuit I don't think any are completely shorted to ground but it wouldn't hurt to ohm check them to ground with the sensors unplugged.

Here are the pics of the resistance testing for the OBD Port, showing the pins I was connected to and the reading. WARNING - PHOTO DEPICTS FRONT PROBE. Please know the connector was already warped with the one pin hole broken. I have a kit to replace it, along with the blower motor wiring, both of which I located today yay!!. I removed the OBD port from where it is mounted under the dash initially to tighten the pins way back when, but found it was a lot easier to get to this way. Once all of the probing is done, I'll replace it. Also attached is an example of how I was re-testing the 5v. As mentioned before, I only did a few and decided it might not be necessary since I was getting the same readings.

To make sure I have this one right, I would:

    Disconnect battery
    Unplug all of the sensors
    Meter to ohm setting
One lead on one of the 5v pins
    Other lead on good ground
OL or zero is good. Anything else needs to be further checked?

Yea front probing is never a good idea unless you have the proper front probing pins or something the same size or smaller than the male terminal.

Yes you want to go from each of your 5v circuits to ground.
You want to be on your higher ohm setting when checking for shorts to ground, you should see OL or a very high reading.

You could double check your powers but it's looking like a bad PCM.

We are also going to need to see what's shorting the CAN bus.

Crikey I thought I provided an update! I needed a day to catch up on a few things around the house..and err...ummm...well I also needed a break from all the contortion my body has not experienced in a really long time. Using the step stool to reach the engine parts and then doing the limbo twist to check some of the wires had me using a few muscles I never knew existed. So I don't sound like some out of shape hag, I also took a day to get all of the blasted tools in the workshop organized - a lot of walking and heavy lifting. The level of satisfaction achieved when I know what tool I'm after and knowing exactly what drawer I'll find it in...it's amazing. Hopefully it will stay that way else it might be grounds for divorce. I'll be back in action starting tomorrow (Friday).

Apologies for appearing like I dropped from the planet. I'm here and ready to battle the truck again!
