    Did a quick search...

This one is difficult, because there are many separate species of lightning bugs (or Fireflies, as most call them out West).
Apparently, Fireflies West of the Continental Divide produce a much fainter light than Lightning Bugs here in the East.
Only the females produce light, and only on the ground.

Here in the East, Lightning Bug males are the whole show.
They fly around flashing every few seconds until a female on the ground signals back.
And they're bright, make no mistake.

You're really missing something if you haven't seen a Lightning Bug show.
If you're in the right place at the right time, it's a stunning display.

    Here's the ideal scenario:

Hot, humid evening in early July just after the sun has gone down.
A large cornfield that has not been dosed with pesticides (or only lightly), will have tens of thousands of them.

Some Lightning Bugs will flash pretty much all night, but the first hour or so is best.

    Well, I went today
Maybe I will go again tomorrow
Yeah yeah, well, the music there
    Well, it was hauntingly familiar
Well, I see you doing what I try to do for me
With the words from a poet and a voice from a choir
And a melody, and nothing else mattered

Kansas is pretty far, so the fact that they're still out there is hopeful. :)
