I thought the rear seat delete is only part of the utility package available on the SR four-cylinder model.

It is. Wanted the delete, also wanted a V6, no utility package with the six. Really hate how Toyota specs their trims.

Where-as I could order a XL Ranger, with the rear seat delete, rubber floors, vinyl seats, and a locker. Unfortunate can’t do that with a Tacoma.

I just think it’s weird that he says that people aren’t caring people, they’re carrying gear and they don’t want the backseat, but they want the space, and then he makes that space more difficult to access…

And if you really want to do a deeper dive, isn’t the SR with the rear seat delete more a fleet truck and not a run of the mill customer purchase?

Rear seat delete is only for the SR utility pkg as far as I know. SR convenience pkgs, SX pkgs, SR5, TRD Sport and TRD OffRoad still come with access cab seats.

It is because they are looking at sales numbers and not actually talking to the customers, statistics only tell part of the story. Typical bean counters.

Yeah, the base SR is a fleet truck. I like fleet trucks, because I am hard on interiors would have loved vinyl seats and rubber floors, but it is what it is. Base has no fender flares, since I run Forest Service roads often, want to try and protect the paint since I tend to rack up the miles 20-25K/year. The SR offers the SX package which came with flares, nicer aluminum wheels over steel, all weather floor mats (since they no longer offer rubber flooring) and door sill protectors. Could have stepped up the SR5, but didn’t like the interior with all the silver bits, mine is all black, nor the painted flares…those will get blasted with gravel pitting the paint. Those electric seats would have been nice though, since my wife uses the truck too while my (now hers) 1st Gen is getting a new engine.

I think it's a completely boneheaded move by Toyota to delete those doors.

I traded a regular cab hardbody Nissan for a Frontier with the access doors and was amazed at how much more useful the truck was. Never once did I carry passengers, but I used those doors all the time. I'd never consider buying a truck without rear access doors again.

No true access cab has killed the Tacoma for me. I had a second gen and really wanted a 4G, but not and extracab. Looks like I'll have to check out the Frontier.

Toyota probably could have gotten me to trade in early if they offered the AC for ‘24. Because the 4G improved a lot over what the 3G was lacking. The new engine looks very tempting. Did read an article about Toyota is wanting people trade-in/lease sooner rather than later.

    https://www.carscoops.com/2022/11/t...mers-to-go-back-to-leasing-instead-of-buying/

Now, I’ll just hold out longer. It isn’t a total loss, could just move to a DCLB (those DCSBs beds don’t work for me) that extra space behind the cab could be even better, more if you delete the seats. However if you run the numbers, DCLB vs. a Tundra DC6.5’ bed, the Tacoma doesn’t make much sense to me. Not sure I like the Tundra enough to buy one over a Ford or Chevy. GM does offer a diesel in their half ton, that would work much better for what I need a truck to do, towing a toy hauler. Then again the price those command, might as well buy a 3/4-1 Ton gasser. At least that is how my mind works for the job at hand.

Frontier is a good looking truck. Personally I don't discriminate vehicles. They have to be practical, dependable and reasonable.$$$. I just don't get what the heck is going on with these companies lately....
Budweiser puts disgusting pictures on bud light can Toyota goes to cheap route for an upcoming Tacoma....i just don't get it... I must be old school ...

Yes, Budweiser's advertising and Toyota's discontinuation of the access cab are 100% connected. Look into it.

Ford is the only manufacture that offered the features I wanted. tt6 engine, no start/stop, rear locker that operates in Rwd, column shifter, manual seats, rubber floor, non digital climate controls. Other than turbos, and the stupid sync system it's a very basic truck. It has rear clam shell doors, but I wouldn't mind if it didn't.

Toyota also discontinued the SR SX, which eliminated the trim of Tacoma I wanted.

I do like how Ford specs their trucks.

Toyota bumped the SX package to the SR5, which if I had to do it again would go that route. I could trade in my SR, but don’t want the hassle over the color I want (Blue Crush Metallic) and power seats. The seat thing of my wife borrowing my truck and adjusting it, is only temporary until we get the 1st Gen back from the shop.

More affordable and hopefully with 4WD means it will make offroading more affordable to many as well. The eco-conscious/TREAD Lightly focused groups continue to grow and more people are getting to enjoy the outdoors that way. In BC many lament about the failing forestry industry, but the tourism industry is growing like the wildfires of 2021. It could be an easy way to help change the economy to a more profitable direction. I see a decent amount of Tacoma fleet vehicles where I am, why not purchase Xtra Cabs as fleet vehicles for an offroad adventure business? There are already a few around that teach the skills, why not teach the skills through a multi-day offering with more than one trainer? :D

The return of the Xtra Cab is a step backwards, if they really want to cut cost, bring back manual hubs, trans, t-case, ditch the turbo 4, and toss in a SFA while they are at it. $25K msrp. Then maybe I would be interested.

Just rent out UTVs, cheaper, safer, more capable, can haul 4 people, and they already do that in a lot of places. They are friggin everywhere here. If they put it on its’ roof, you roll them back over and keep going.

Not terribly sure where you're located, but UTVs don't make sense for certain travel where I am. We're also not talking about what you're interested in, nor what people in your locale are interested in. I would assume our climates are vastly different and more remote (on my end), as is the population and what they want and the groups that organize events as described in my original post.

A UTV doesn't keep you warm on hundreds of kilometers of ice road travel touring, nor 1000+km with limited service on gravel roads with high dust, mud, cold, bugs of all kinds that will find you and bite or sting you to oblivion, etc. A lot of these are legal roads, too, not trails, but not the warm and cozy you can take a sedan down, and ORV/UTV vehicles require similar insurance, legal drivers' license, ID, often VHF radio systems (not mandatory, but highly recommended) IF they're even roads that designate use to ORVs in the first place.

An ORV doesn't stand a chance against a resource hauling vehicle, either. A truck designed for vehicle impact is a little better off.

Idaho, we get snow too, they rent snowmobiles and snowbikes when dirt season is over. So year round rentals. 1000s of miles of dirt roads and trails.

Sure there are overland type vehicles for rent too, but I never seen any in the back country, In the desert and/or mountains once or twice a week, the ones I have seen are tourists at camp grounds. UTVs however have taken over, can’t swing a stick without hitting one. Can make them street legal here, just can’t take them on the interstate, which isn’t really the point of them.

    That’s cool!

UTVs are over taking Jeep rentals, at least here in Idaho, Utah, Arizona, and Colorado. Have become so popular local residents are trying to ban them.

    https://www.keepsedonabeautiful.org/ohv/

I just don’t see Tacoma Xtra Cabs being a popular rental vehicle. Overland rentals exist, just not like the hordes of UTVs that do.

Don’t even see an Access Cab in this fleet, all crew cabs as most people who rent them are families.

Would rather have a regular cab with an 8 foot bed. Like the 1st Gen Tundra V6 with 6MT.
