I saw this badass (and very expensive) weapon in the Cabela's gun library...

It's literally worth as much as my truck! I know a thing or two bout handguns and AR-15s, but I know nothing about this weapon other than it looks like a machine gun that a soldier would use; I also once saw a $25K handmade rifle at this same Cabela's last year, but that seem to have been sold...

The key words here being looks like… functionally it’s the same as every other semi auto rifle out there.

Having carried and used the real deal on a couple deployments, having the M249s would just be to bring the wtf factor to people who I show my guns to. Function and fun of it are not worth the price. For a lot less than that, you could build a VERY nice AR that will sling the same bullets at the same speed and same rate of fire (faster if you install a polished binary trigger).
Belt fed semi auto just isn't worth the price. If I had $10k to dump into one gun, I'd get a 50.

It’s a cool gun. But he’ll look at that crazy price. Like who has that kind of money

You'd be surprised, but you can get a gun that looks sorta similar and does the same thing for MUCH cheaper...

This is a tough topic to dive into without getting political, but I’ll just say that guns are for sporting, recreation and self defense and those are all things that a person on the autism spectrum has a right to, just like anyone else does.

For what it’s worth, I run a firearms training company as a side business and I’ve probably taught some people with Autism. The gun community is a great group of people.

I wish you lived in Pennsylvania instead of Texas; I've gone shooting plenty of times but only have limited experience and want somebody with more experience to teach her.

Well, if you both ever do find yourself in Texas, drop me a line, and I’ll hook you up.

In the interim, you might go check out a local IDPA or USPSA shooting event. Some of the best instructors are the ones that come from the competition background.

What would drive someone to build something like this?

Less black means less scary. Plus it wasn't an AR-15 to begin with.....

it’s all about the LOLs. There’s a whole subreddit where people just build meme guns as a joke.
