Swing Out Tire Carrier for Gen 1 Tacoma

I am sure that this been discussed thoroughly. I was hoping that someone had a sketch of how they fabricated theirs. I am currently brainstorming the build. Thanks for any advice.

 

Lots of different ideas. We’re you thinking hitch mounted. Bumper mounted. Or tailgate mounted?

 

I have a Shrockworks rear bumper and want to add a swing out carrier to it. I have already bought a 4xInnovation swing bearing assembly and latch.

 

If you search, I think there is a thread dedicated to 1st gen swing out tailgate design and builds.

I'll just add here, that you should plate your rear frame sections if you add the swing out. You can really jack up the rear frame sections moving that much dynamic weight to the end of the frame rails.

 

Didn't you have one of these on the old Baywatchmobile, @Taco critter?

 

Pretty easy; the enemy really being yourself and just finishing it.

Just need to buy more 2" square tube and stop being lazy and finish it

 

If you can`t cut the material on your fancy table you have no incentive to do much else but build carts.

 

Dude, all those parts were cut with a hand torch!

The hard part was done long ago. I just need square tube to finish the tire holder portion, and someone to bend some DOM for protection on the sides.

and due to deflection, this hugely reinforces the 'wing' since the weight of the tire hinges on this side not to mention offering some protection against crumpling on side impact -



I plan to cut that plate and make a sort of 'platform' to slide off of to prevent getting caught up on a rock.

I used the 4x kit to add one to my coastal.
