I saw this Jeep GC tailgating a local guy on the highway today. I'm thinking what are you doing? it wasn't even rush hour. I know they had zero interest in getting behind them and pulling them over. Just a blatant display in the lack of critical thinking by another member of the motoring public.

I would love a BEV Tacoma. But my wheeling consists of 30’ of gravel once a day.

Coming in late to this fascinating discussion.

The drive system Mr. Trolly-McTrollface is describing is very common in locomotives and heavy off-road haul trucks where the engine drives a generator which then sends power to electric motors at the drive wheels. When you get into the multiple thousands of horsepower, a big honking cable is a lot simpler that the clutches and transmission you need to get that much power to each wheel. Plus, you can do braking with an electric radiator instead of friction discs, or get really fancy on haul trucks and make one wheel go at a different speed than the other depending on the steering angle and get a surprisingly short turning radius.

But on a Tacoma, the vast majority of of the energy comes from the engine, and goes directly to the wheels. The motor/generator/battery set gives you some "zoom zoom" on acceleration, and can use regenerative braking to store and then re-use some energy to significantly reduce fuel consumption in stop/go or uphill/downhill driving. The hybrid battery can only store a few minutes worth of power as far as the motor is concerned, but that works just fine for short trips with lots of braking involved. (When was the last time you applied your brakes to slow down for 4 minutes non-stop?)

Out on the open road, after a few minutes the engine is the only thing that's making the vehicle go forward...that's why hybrids get virtually the same mileage as non-hybrids in the highway ratings.

If you drive 250miles each way to go on a a trail. An ev isn't for you. Im sure there are no gas or charging stations on your incredible journey to the trail that you probably do every day after work. Its also uphill both ways and more difficult than the Rubicon trail but you can do it with a stock rig because you are so good.

The Transamerican trail is the only trail I heard of so far that has charging along the trail system.

I don't know, man, by all accounts, the 'Yota engineers knocked it out of the f__ing park with the Gen 4. Unless there's a MAJOR disconnect between their published powerplant specs and the contact patches, this is going to be a rockin' truck. I don't understand all the trolling and whatnot.

They ever going to make plugs standardized? That TFL trip to Alaska in the Lightning they had to carry a bunch of adapters.

That was the plan but then Tesla came along and said they won't use the standard and wouldn't let other manufacturers use their chargers so they ended up using different plugs. Mostly CCS for level 2 and DCFC and then Tesla proprietary. But now you can use Tesla Superchargers with a CCS to Tesla adaptor. Ford now will produce their Mach E with a Tesla charger port. Rivian uses J1772

Agreed that it looks like they completely nailed it, so much so that I’m salivating to go test drive one when they come out.

I do think we shouldn’t get our hopes up on that iForce Max powertrain around outright performance though. The numbers look great on paper, but have shown to not provide class leading performance in the real world.

On the flip side, the F150 has a huge weight advantage over the Tundra that I feel like the Ranger won’t over the Tacoma. It could go either way for which comes out on top at the track with the Ranger 2.7 V6 vs Tacoma iForce Max

Speaking of weight, have they release the GVRs yet?

ETA: I'm only worried about the G4 beating the pants off my G2. I'm not so concerned about beating other makes.

I haven’t seen any data yet, but they have used more weight saving measure like aluminum hood, tailgate (which I hope is strong enough) and a lighter bed. That with the new frame and smaller engine may make for an overall lighter non-hybrid version

I'm hoping that the MAX is lighter than my G2 as well.

lol I hate adding that. Was hoping between the context of all the absurd posts before it and the quotation marks, it would be clear. I need to stop being an optimist...
