    The subscription model mentality
It's only going to get worse before it gets better

At the end of the day it's the consumer's choice :/

Nah cars like this aren’t too bad, it’s the trucks that are moneypits IME. As much as I enjoy my Tacoma I never should’ve bought a 4x4. If I’d invested all that money I spent on my shitboxes a couple years ago I’d be infinitely better off financially now.

You really shouldn't be a vehicle enthusiast. You should be financing a new Civic with extended warranty and all weather floor mats every 10 years

How many vehicles have you really owned?

And what's wrong with a 4x4 Tacoma? Stupidly reliable and stupidly easy to work on.

No way dude, 5-6 years

He'll be one of those guys that truly believes "once I'm done paying it off..." or "once the warranty is up that's when the issues arise"

I’ve owned 6 total. My 96 Camry was dead nuts reliable and cost me almost nothing to operate. I loved that car. My 99 Forester wasn’t quite as reliable but was still pretty cheap to keep on the road. My 98 Tacoma was a total moneypit, however. It must have been wheeled hard or something since the hub was bent and the rear frame or axle had been tweaked. It also had some of the regular issues like cracked exhaust manifolds and a cracked radiator.

The Land Cruiser was really an inexcusable purchase though, since I didn’t learn my lesson the first time, and people on the forums even told me they made Tacomas look cheap, but I was too excited over the solid front axle. Trading it for my Tacoma was another dumb move since it was almost undrivable when I got it. I’ll never agree to a long-distance trade or purchase again.

IME 4x4s are just orders of magnitude more expensive to maintain than regular cars of the same era. They also tend to get abused more.

Dude, you have never truly experienced owning a car that was ever expensive to maintain.

I mean it nicely, but all the vehicles you listed are the most affordable and reliable cars you could name lol Subaru wouldn't be on the list if it was a turbo. Their N/A variants don't create enough power to kill themselves.

I’ll never finance a vehicle. If I can’t pay cash I can’t afford it. Besides, Honda isn’t really that reliable anymore, not like the 90s anyway.

Yea the head gasket has been done at some point on the Subaru so it was pretty solid. I did actually have an 02 WRX at one point but I sold it when some of the $$$ turbo-related maintenance came due.

Buy a turbo BMW, or an AMG Merc, a supercharged Range Rover, maybe a super car like an RX7 FD? Hell even basic maintenance on a large turbo diesel truck. Don't get me started on a 60-70's resto mod.

    You haven't experienced anything 'expensive'.

We'll make sure to steer you on the right path  just keep what you own or buy a new vehicle with extended warranty.

Anyway my main point was that if I held off an invested that money back in 2020 I could actually afford a nice 4x4 that’s been maintained well and isn’t a basket case. Delayed gratification and all that.

The one you have now isn't a basket case, you just don't fix any of the minor issues it does have
