Japan now closer to the US

Scientists said the magnitude 9 earthquake that struck Japan on Friday
moved the country 13 feet closer to the U.S., tilted the Earth by 6.5 inches
and shortened the time of the day by 1.8 microseconds.

Seismologist Chen Ji of the University of California Santa Barbara calculated
that a portion of the Pacific tectonic plate near Japan measuring 186 to 248
miles long and 62 miles wide moved 131 feet under the North American
tectonic plate during the powerful earthquake. Geophysicist Ross Stein of
the United States Geological Survey said the plate movement pulled Japan 13 feet closer to the U.S.

Japan’s eastern coastline also sank two feet causing seawater to roll in.

The force of the quake shifted the Earth’s mass toward the center causing
the earth to rotate faster. In effect, the length of the 24-hour day
shortened by 1.8 microseconds, according to geophysicist Richard Gross at
NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California.

Gross also said that the Earth’s figure axis shifted by 6.5 inches as the planet wobbled during the earthquake.

Crazy stuff. I saw this video on the news this guy took of a park filling up with water and he looked down at a large crack in the pavement(probably 10-12 inches wide) and you could see the ground still moving. I will see if I can locate it.
