I see your point. I'm not saying that wouldn't bother me, it does seem a bit excessive. To be honest, there are a lot of noises that bother me about my truck. The hardest part about owning it is becoming comfortable with them.

I try to keep the AK47 and 1911 philosophy in mind though, loose in just the right places. Yes they may rattle and seem cheap, but there is no denying they just keep on working.

That's why these trucks hold their resale value so well, when it comes down to it, they just keep on working. That's what we paid for.

I would just keep your ear on it for a while. Sounds like you have plenty of warranty left. If it is something detrimental taking place inside the engine, its probably not going to make it 30,000 miles without becoming much worse. At that point no one will deny there is a problem and you will probably get a new engine out of it.

Just keep a record of the noise with the service department starting now, and get every single oil change done at a dealer. That way if the time comes, they will have no excuse to deny you.

    Thats my .02

    I thought all Toyotas tick. My 93 22R ticked, my 05 4Runner had a slight tick, my wifes 04 Rav4 ticks, my 05 and 07 Tacoma's tick.
It sounds a lot like the injectors ticking on my Cobra. They make alittle ticking noise.

x2 It really sounds like Diesel. Dealer needs to check this its definitely not right. I have 07 and most of the sound coming is from belt. and faint injectors click.
BTW Mine 07 does not tick

I must be in the minority here, my 07 doesn't have the ticking noise....at least if it does I've never noticed it. :notsure:

I just bought an '11 on Sunday with 14 miles on it (4wd, TRD Sport, double cab, short bed). I've driven other Tacos in the past and on this day, I test drove two. I noticed that when driving the second truck, the engine was definitely noisier under acceleration than the first. It was the first thing I mentioned to the sales guy on the test drive, to which he remained silent.

I was reminded back to when I owned a VW Bug. When the manifold worked its way loose, there was a definite ticking sound. So when I read this, I was thinking, "yeah, that's exactly the sound!".

I'm going to take it in and have it looked at, but from everything I've been reading, it seems that this is the norm and there's probably not much they'll do about it.

    Cheers,
    -SFB

Edit: Just realized this poll has been closed, but my answer would be "B" as I only hear it inside when accelerating.

I'm not sure who closed this poll and why... There is still interest in the subject. It's very frustraiting to know that Toyota can't figure out why some tick and some don't.

Here's the latest video I did to document my 2011 tick
    It's really bad.

    ctk,
This sounds exactly like mine, wasn't expected this sound from a brand new truck (2011 DC SR5 2wd V6). Not too worried about it right now though and am trying my best to adapt to it. I've owned a lot of cars/trucks, but have never owned a Tacoma before. Having only had Toyota cars I was surprised how loud this thing runs. This thing makes more noise than my F150 with 100+k did.

Like most are saying, I'm hoping this is just a Tacoma thing as I plan on running this truck into the ground. Aside from the noise, so far it’s been one of my favorite trucks.

By the way, right now my new truck sounds like a real pile of crap. Aside from the ticking the darn rear end (leaf springs) are already squeaking.

Man is this a new truck or what?

Generally as valves and seats age, they get tighter. My guess is that, on the assembly line, they purposely adjust the valves on the loose side of spec. knowing full well that 99.9999% of owners will never get into the valves during the life of the truck and Toyota doesn't want tight valves to become an issue.

Sorry about the thread necromancy, but is this "Tacoma tick" sort of a ticking, sort of a rattling sound under acceleration?

Hi colder, Sounds about right... I posted several videos of mine ticking. Sounded like an 18 wheeler. tick, rattle, ect. Sure sounds like mine did. I deleted the video to get it off my youtube account. I wanted to distance myself from the nightmare of a problem that Toyota refused to acknowledge.
If enough people are interested, I'd be willing to upload it again.

It's not a loud or obtrusive noise. It could be normal for all I know.

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
mine does a little when it is cold, but after it warms up it is gone, i dont think it is a big deal, it is still under warranty so if something breaks it will get fixed
