Even with a 240v machine, you will seldom weld anything greater than 1/4". So don't sweat the 120/240v issue. With practice you can do just fine on 120v.

Yes, gas last quite a while when you learn to dial it back to the bare minimum. Get the size you can store and handle.

 

Do what ever you need to do to make it work.

The numbers on the display just get you close.

I might think about changing the design of that joint.

There is nothing on these trucks with some arc time you can not weld with any 120vac machine of decent quality

Welding Distributors can not even purchase from Lincoln the machines sold to the big box stores .

Yes there are differences that is all I can say . Someone in the past forgot to mention or have me sign something related to Lincoln.

As to cylinder size it never fails you always run out on holiday weekends

First habit always check the cylinder is shut off every time you walk past.

We all at least one time forget and find a empty cylinder.

Those are just scrap pieces to simulate a tierod patched together with a piece of angle. There are no numbers, this is a homemade welder.

 

Welding the same material on 220 takes half the amperage than it does on 120. Less wear and tear on the electrical components, duty cycle is increased immensely.

Pay close attention to the duty cycle of most of the cheaper machines.....

 

So there is no control on amperage basically because the amperage is essentially always the same from the source, correct? So you are hoping to control heat by lowering wire speed? Maybe your only option is to quicken the speed you move and still have wire speed match the item you are welding?

 

Right, currently there is no control over voltage, amperage, or wire speed. I bought a PWM motor controller yesterday that I'll wire in to control wire speed and see what results I get.

I was actually surprised with the ability of this thing and compared it to "air arc gouging" lol. It acted more like a cutting method rather than a welding method, but in the end the melted puddle did weld the parts together.

 

At that point I'd just wire up two car batteries in series and burn some 7018 rod

That's just me though

 

Maybe you and/or @Kwikvette can lead the way on a tubing notcher. There are some guys working on it, but not sure anyone has setup a nice system for X-Fire.

I did what I did last time; loosened up the gantry tube bolts and squared things up again.

I don't know if I just need to throw on some loctite or something cause guess what, it's cutting square again.

On 3/16" it was super obvious as the metal is thick enough to display a large bevel; not today!





Can see how clean and square it cut.
