Swapping Input Shafts for FJ Case for Manual Transmission

Here’s a pic of the AWD input shaft on the back side. It’s larger than the one on the part time case

 

I'm assuming that gear isn't able to be swapped for the one on the AT tcase?

I believe the planetaries are a little different (part #s below). The Tacoma t-case input is going to be the bolt up solution and make things work for sure. I would try to hunt one of those down.

I’ve got a whole taco tcase 6speed, not sure where you are located though. Don’t really feel like taking it apart but I’d sell the whole thing.

 

I have one somewhere in the basement that I bought for my conversion and haven’t gotten around to doing it. I’d be willing to part with it. Let me look back in my messages to see what I have in it and find it.

I want to thank all y'all for your help without this thread I would have been lost. I broke down the donor case and swapped the input shaft fairly quickly with only a few hiccups along the way. I also forgot how much I enjoyed wrenching & how much I hate scrapping gasket surfaces. Pics and write up to fallow

 

This little guy is pita and I used a bunch of assembly lube to get it to stick together

 

I found a cir-clip had gone for a walk and had to encourage it back into place

 

All in all the op write up is on point and the other additions in the comments were very helpful. More to come soon

 

The FJ is alive and moving under its own power! In 2wd! Thanks again for all the Information and help. I just took a quick lap around the block, now I have to wait for the front diff to be rebuilt

By the way, Nice to keep this alive. Such a great upgrade for AWD conversion to selectable.. So rad. Even though Scott Wyatt fucked me on RST orders for a year thru 2020. Glad he was a pioneer to help others do this.

 

Is there anyone currently offering already-converted auto FJ transfer cases, meaning transfer cases with Tacoma input shafts already installed? Also, are there any Tacomas running the https://frontrangeoffroadfab.com/twin-stick/ ?

 

Question for those who have also completed this swap: When daily driving on pavement, do you hear a little rattle or knocking sound coming from the Tcase/ shift lever? I am assuming that since the shift lever/ handle had to be modified and the OEM dampening section has been removed, it allows some of the internal sound come through and into the cab.
I can touch the shift handle and it goes away...
Almost seems like the internal bottom of the shift lever that actually touches and engages the 2 shift rails need to have a synthetic cover around it, so that its not metal on metal in there....

 

Yo TW and EatSleepTacos! Thanks for putting this thread together. I'm feeling much less over-my-head about what's half-baked in my garage (DCLB auto to manual swap, 4Runner manual t-case, 3rd gen e-brake handle swap with everything pulled and lying around the garage).

Question 1:
Where can I source the 6spd manaul input shaft and ring gear? Anyone have those lying around and want to ship them my way for some electronic dollar bills?

 

Sorry for the super late reply but I did get a little noise out of the shifter while daily driving.

Are you asking for a crawl box or something? I’m not sure, probably direct from Toyota.
