Company I work for is looking for a new machinist and has tasked me with doing research in the correct terminology and task list for what our company should be looking for when hiring a new machinist. Figured maybe I can pick someone's brain here for some bullet points. Please DM me if you can lend a hand.

    Thank you!

The company you work for has no idea how to hire a CNC Machinist?

Do you at least know what skills they need? The type of machines ?

Is this a new start up?

Anymore CNC is a very generic term.

    Best of luck!

The company I work for sent an employee to schooling to get trained. He then worked here for a number of years then bounced on us without any notice. We know the jobs we need the machinists to complete. Just not sure what tools or methologies to use when looking for one.

This is not a startup company. We are a distribution company that has been doing custom machining jobs.

Are you talking more 1 of a kind custom parts small runs not 3000 pieces of one part.

More of a maintenance machinist able to do it all either from a print or from the failed pieces?

In Garage/Workshop check the Anything machining thread That should get you the most results

    Good Luck!

Well, you'd want to look for someone with CAD/CAM experience which stands for computer aided design and computer aided manufacturing.

Step one is being fluent in the software that deals with the above mentioned.

Step two is being familiar with the hardware that runs the code generated by CAD/CAM.

This could be milling, laser, plasma, waterjet, etc.

Someone who can run a Haas SL10 for jobs under 100pcs, using a lathe to custom groove pieces and drill & tap. Amongst other basic things like deburring.

That's a cool setup as it looks like it's mostly all one unit -

jump on Indeed and look up machinist positions. you'll see they vary on descriptions depending on skill level, work type, machine style, iso, etc..

For that roll, it sounds like you are looking for an operator. Next up from that would be a setup/operator (someone who can read prints, setup work holding and tooling, make on the fly adjustments and troubleshoots). Next up from that would be Programmer/Machinists.. we can do all the above mentioned, plus CAD/CAM work.. being usually 100% self sufficient.

I know @Fuergrissa has CAD/CAM experience as well.

    Maybe he can chime in.
