Hey everyone! So I am new here and I joined bc I am really considering financing a 2010 Tacoma but I wanted some advice before I did so. It’s only had one owner and he kept up with the maintenance. I really like the truck and want it but the only thing stopping me is that it has 198,000 miles and they want 14,500 for it. I know Toyotas are really reliable but I’m not sure if I should do it. Is it too much money for that many miles?

Financing a vehicle that age and mileage may not be an easy task.

What the lender may loan is one view of value.

Another would be asking your insurance carrier what a pay out on being totaled might be.

Has the truck ever lived in salt country? An aggressive frame inspection is in order if it has.

Welcome to TW…ok so the truck is 13 years old with 200k miles
For 14,500… I would say that’s a little bit to much

So besides the $14,500 price tag is 198,000 too many miles for a 2010? How many more miles could i still get on it?

A compression test and oil sample test as part of a pre purchase inspection would be helpful.

You could double that mileage. Or die next week.

And again, what about the frame?

this was how i ended up in a 2002 ford ranger before. i think that price is roughly par for the course for tacoma's and their pedigree.

rangers are going to have similar age/mileage results, but anything pre-2008 will be under $10k, closer to $2-5k. production ended in 2011, the '09-11 are at tacoma-pricing levels due to the 'unicorn factor'. they're just as reliable, have just as many rust and maintenance issues, but can be had for much cheaper simply because of the brand on the title.

you're going to have trouble financing $14k, so i hope you have the cash on hand. most places that offer vehicle loans get really leery of any vehicle over about 4-5 years old--there's this expectation that anything 10+ years old is going to spontaneously blow up and you'll just stop making payments.

most vehicles these days can easily last to 300k miles as long as proper maintenance was performed. my ranger, the main problem was the guy did maintenance, but none of it was proper.

my first rule with buying someone else's used car is that unless they have receipts that follow the maintenance schedule in the manual, don't take their word for it, assume zero of it was performed, and must be done immediately.

they're selling for a reason, and most of the time, once they officially sell, they've been deferring maintenance for at least 1-2 years, which means there's always something to catch up on with a used vehicle.

    Everyone has an opinion.
Just simply answering your direct question, the milage is a little high for the year, but not outrageous.

    It's a secret
Offer $4k. Something will break within 10k miles and will cost at least $1500 to fix.

The truck could be good even with those miles and age. The question is for that kind of money do you need a truck ? Do you use it for work ? Really if you don’t and just going back and forth to work you may be better off with a car for now .
1- could be much less money
    2- less to maintain usually
3- much better on gas .
At least until you save up and buy what you want. Just a thought

I bought my 2003 V8 Tundra in 2014 with only 125k miles for that price. Seems steep for a taco that's older (11 years at the time of purchase vs 13 years) and has more miles, but the market is still crap right now I suppose.

I would offer 5K cash (max). Take it or walk. It's one thing if it was a Gen 3, but it is a Gen 2 Taco.

If I was looking at a vehicle with 200,000 miles, it better not be more than $3000.

You know it's a bad deal when TruckGuy re-evaluates even buying a truck from it.

Price is high, rates will be higher, and there's really not a lot of value in that year, being one of the older second gens. Sounds like the dealer is being (extra) greedy, and it may not be a money pit, but it could be very annoying to own if it hasn't been maintained (which we'll never know).

    that's not the current market.

anything that runs starts at $5k.

runs, but lacks a title starts at $3k.

hard to find anything regardless of mileage that's decent for under $8k anymore
