break-in procedure before road trip from the dealership to home…

Our new 2017 got packed up for three days of camping the day after we got it and we drove it non-stop from So Cal to north of Boise ID to see the 2017 eclipse, then we bombed back home to get my daughter back in school.

You will be fine. No need to take breaks. Just don't speed and vary your rpms slightly. I drove mine 100 miles to get it home.

 

Yup, with any new engine building good cylinder pressure is needed to seat the rings. Usually you want dino oil to seat the rings asap. I guess the synthetics must work ok to for these engines, but I'll bet it takes longer.

 

I picked up my 6MT and had 500 mile drive home. I tried real hard to follow the manual but I can’t drive 55.

 

As stated here already, the seating of the rings is the most critical aspect in a modern engine (low tension rings). Cylinder pressure pushes the rings into the walls to seat them. Briefly accelerating hard at a low RPM is a good break in practice, with a short cool down cruise in between.
Doing this, (and varying the RPMs every five or ten minutes) the engine will have a nice start to its life by the time you get home. Good luck with your truck!

i was gonna say, the the-new 2017 mitsubish eclipse cross has got to be one of the most disappointing reasons to travel the country, ever.

 

I broke mine in by driving 100 miles at 65-80 MPH with a 6000’+ elevation gain. No probs.

 

Drove mine 375 miles home when I got it. Just drove it normal , made normal stops, the truck was fine and is still doing great. I wouldn't over think it. Congratulations on your new truck!

 

Signed paperwork at the dealer and drove off the lot with 2 miles on the clock drove it 900 miles home by the next day. You'll be fine. Vary rpms and dont redline it for a while.

 

Per the owners manual, page 171:
For the first 200 miles:

• Avoid sudden stops.

For the first 500 miles:

• Do not tow a trailer.

For the first 1000 miles:

• Do not drive at extremely high speeds.
• Avoid sudden acceleration.
• Do not drive continuously in low gears.
• Do not drive at a constant speed for extended periods.

Everything else is anecdotal at best.

Acceleration and high rpm are not by themselves problems and may actually benefit the break-in by helping to seat the rings. The real enemy is heat.

Once the engine is at operating temp, a high rpm acceleration run followed by a brief steady state cooldown period is just fine.

All you need to do is not absolutely flog it such that heat builds up and not hold it at steady rpm on the highway for long periods. It’s ok, even beneficial, to accelerate hard occasionally.

 

I have a manual TRD Sport I am breaking in now. Its only at about 800Km. when I finally get to 1000 miles or 1300Km, should I change the Manual transmission fluid along with the engine oil? I do notice now that the MT shifts way smother after a small breakin in time with the synchros. Not sure if I am driving it better than when I first got it but she sure shifts real smooth now. You think it's a good idea to swap both MT fluid and engine at the same time post break in?

There are thousands of new cars sold every day where people don’t read the manual at all so don’t even know there ever was a “break in “period.
Any person loading /unloading these freshly built , zero mile vehicles onto trains ,trucks , trailers during transit don’t give two shits about “break in “and especially if it’s a performance vehicle think for a minute what do they do to it?
If the manufacturer was having “break in “issues that were causing class action lawsuits,believe me they would be very specific on “break ins” instead of vague instructions on the first 1000 miles.
For those that want , sure change fluids early but again if there was a issue that was causing long term effects why isn’t Toyota mandating a earlier than 10000 mile oil change?
It’s because the manufacturers internal long term data shows that they can do that and not suffer consumer backlash from “break in “issues.
These mass built vehicles have been designed (dumb downed if you will) to not be a issue no matter how they driven .
The vast majority of vehicles on the road receive minimal maintenance and last a long time compared to what they used to.

 

No. Toyota care will do the first motor oil change at 5k miles, or 1 year. No need to do it any sooner. If severe use like towing, change the gear fluids at 30k miles.

 

Update: Perfect timing:I got notice today that my white 2023 Tacoma DCSB OR MT is waiting for me at the Toyota dealership in Clovis, California. I’m leaving at 6am tomorrow morning for a 3 hour drive in my trade-in vehicle: a black 2020 Tacoma DCSB SR5 V6 2WD automatic. This has been a great truck and has only 24k miles.

I’ll post pictures of the journey here if that’s OK. Out of sheer curiosity one of the things I did was use a pyrometer to measure the differential temperature on the current Tacoma after a few of my recent freeway trips. It reads about 138-140 deg F on average on relatively cool (65-70 deg) days.

I’m curious to know what temps a new diff puts out on my trip home. I’ll take a few readings after a 15 minute drive from the dealership and then more readings as I stop along the way. It may be a fruitless exercise in the end but I’d like to know how hot these things get before and after break in. I intend to keep this truck well past 100k miles.

 

Should be super fine just vary the speeds do NOT drive it like you stole it, and take a break now and then.

Find some secondary roads to take along the way and enjoy the drive through some new towns you've never seen.

4WD only on gravel roads - not on pavement 'eh - you'd probably wanna be closer to home as well
just in case.
