I need to pull a 2013 Honda CR-V AWD (4650 lbs) with a stock '17 Limited. Don't want to use a dolly if I don't have too. Is a tow bar an option or is a dolly better? The trip is about 900 miles.

I would have no issues with a dolly
I would check and be sure you can tow the CRV with wheels on ground. Some AWD vehicles can be damaged

Car hauler trailer with brakes is better than either, but I don't know if that plus the car is reasonable for a Tacoma to tow. Also check the Honda's manual to see if flat or on road towing is even allowed (it may not be).

Do you need to use your truck? That's a lot of weight to pull and stop.

2013 was the last year where it can be towed. Thanks!

I don't HAVE TO, but it would save about $1,000.00. 2013 OK to tow per Honda. Thanks.

Regardless of whether the car can be flat towed (unlikely), in many (most?) states (including mine) you cannot legally tow something that heavy without trailer brakes. It sounds sketchy to me. You are basically doubling your combined vehicle weight without any added braking. Braking distance will be about double. I believe some dolly’s have trailer brakes (likely surge)

That said, braking distances can exceed double in snow/ice conditions that I personally experience on a regular basis. You just have to be very aware of it. And in your context, you also have to be aware that your braking distance is far greater than the cars in front of you.

I recommend a 2nd driver or a full-size pickup and a car trailer. The taco is not the best tool for this.

Remove the rear driveshaft on the CRV
    Use a dolly
The weight of the vehicle and a u-haul trailer will be too much for a Tacoma to safely tow

No expert here, but I suspect a trailer with brakes is going to be safer than a dolly with no brakes.

Save $1k before trailer rental, gas, time, trailer brake install, etc? Or after?
If it’s before added costs, $1k sounds pretty darn good.

not when you consider a U-Haul trailer is 2000+ pounds.

This will put the towed load at least 1200-1500 pounds above the max total weight of a Tacoma.

Not so safe when you do the math.

I understand that the trailer is heavy, but with brakes it eliminates much of the danger whereas 4600lbs of unbraked weight does not. With trailer brakes, your stopping distance can be close to your braking distance without a trailer. This is not true with a trailer with no brakes.

There are other concerns, but braking distance seems like one of the top ones.

Either way, you wanna argue it, it’s a bit out of a Tacoma’s league.

With that being said, I have moved quite a few times. I’ve used dollies quite a few times. I’ve never had any issues. With that being said, I didn’t drive like a freaking maniac with my hair on fire, maybe I just got lucky.

The only way I would attempt this would be with a dolly as I stated earlier. No way in hell you’re gonna be able to safely do it with the trailer, even though it’s got brakes. It’s just too much damn weight, you’re looking at about 1850 pounds over the Tacoma’s MAX

    Enough for now
Following. Im planning on doing a similar movement this week towing a uhaul vehicle trailer with my wife’s Volvo. Math works out due to extra weight on my truck. Hoping the suspension upgrades and E rated tires earn their worth. Will post once completed successfully
