Who plans to skip 4th gen entirely?

With PHEV/EVs just around the corner, one can argue the 4th gen Tacoma (at least the gasser) will be obsolete as soon as it hits the pavement. I suspect some 3rd gen owners (including myself) are going to hold tight for a couple years to see if Toyota and other manufacturers offer more fully-electrified options.

well, im still driving a 06 since new and have skipped the 3rd gen. so if i get a new truck, it will be a 4th gen

 

I don't think anyone can say with certainty until the trucks hit the road.

 

I do. (Skipped the 2nd Gen, didn’t care for it.)When I buy again it won’t be a PHEV/EV. The 3-4 year wait of them working out the bugs will put me a year out from retirement. The Tacoma simply isn’t enough truck for what I need it to do. Probably keep the 3rd Gen for running around and get a 1 Ton for traveling. Spending the cash on a 4th Gen doesn’t make sense for a spare vehicle that wouldn’t get driven much.

They finally fix all the annoying issues after all these years of waiting, and the timing is off.

Maybe if they didn’t kill off the AC, might of lured me to trade in early. Not interested in any other cab configuration, DCLB is too close the size of Tundra, if I am going to buy a Full-Size, might as well wait until I am fully retired when I buy a 1 Ton.

 

The 3rd gen will last me another decade at least. After that, we'll see. By that time I expect things to look a lot different than they do today.

 

Nope, don't care. When the PHEV or full EV Tacoma are released. I'll just sell and trade. For me, cars are toys, not investments.

I wonder where 3rd gen Tundra would be if it was released in 2019 or 2020. Mark ups? Competitively priced with other 1/2 tons? Lacking in sales to the point Toyota is questioning it's return for next year? Same place it's at now. The Tundra being the NKOTB of TNGA-F is what has made the truck a swift sales success for Toyota. New Tacoma is sure to have some impact on Tundra numbers.

I am sure the ‘24 Tacoma will eat into the Tundra sales, those who wanted more payload and more “truck-like” engine won’t have to buy a bigger truck to get it now. People complain that the Tundra won’t fit in their garage, but the Tacoma will. Toyota figured that out, why there is an even more Lux Tacoma now.

 

I skipped the 3rd gen. Bought a new 2nd gen when my first kid was born. He’ll drive it halfway across the country to college this summer. I’m out of excuses for getting a new truck and I’m glad the timing worked out for it to be a 4th gen.

I love my '20. Got it fixed up exactly the way I want it so can't see getting a 4th gen and no desire to own an electric vehicle. The technology and mostly infrastructure are still way off for going all electric imo. I'd rather they go the other way and put a bigger V6 with an improved transmission in the Taco. Speaking of new vehicles, had a good looking Bronco come in my shop today. Ford makes the best looking vehicles imo opinion but 2nd Bronco in a row with a leaking front axle seal. Plastic drain pans and drain plugs on the F150 and now the Broncos look like they're built poorly. I was a Ford guy before starting in automotive over 10 years ago. Hope Toyota keeps the quality high with all the new technology. I guess factory extended warranties are going to become mandatory on most vehicles.

I have no idea on range but it probably isn't far. That company is building batteries now, and it sounds like they still want to build trucks latter down the road. Along with every other manufacturer. I can't recall seeing this Atlis when it was news.

Mainly due to no need for anything new. Tacoma paid off. Tundra a few years away from that. Both have low miles. Run like a champ and no issues.

a few weeks ago I was talking to the wife about it and she asked me if I was going to get one, I laughed and said no. Not that she would care too much if I did.

 

I like my 5 lug. Does all I need and more. It wasn't new when I got it. Out of 50ish vehicles only 3 have been new. So not my thing.

EV might be fun to play with, but in depth analysis will result in them not doing much to save the planet, which seems to be the underlying rally cry by OEs and Gubamint.

 

I’m in the same boat as you. Glad I skipped the 3rd Gen. I’m a few years my son will be driving and maybe he’ll get my 15, lol. Looking forward to see how 2.4LT pans out. Possibly a 4 Runner in my future.
